SSM Role

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself for those new students who may not be familiar with me and my role. As Student Support Manager (SSM), I offer both formal and ad hoc sessions to all students at various points throughout the year.

Formal bi-annual sessions offer students a formal opportunity to provide feedback on your experience of the course, which is then anonymously analysed and reported back to CNELM in order to enhance services to students.

Aspects of your studies covered in formal sessions include: -

  • Gauging whether you are on track with your study programme
  • If you generally are happy with the level of feedback received for assessments
  • If teaching and administrative staff are accessible and supportive
  • If the learning resources are accessible and suitable to your needs
The focus of the formal sessions is therefore mainly academic.

Ad hoc sessions run monthly throughout the year and provide confidential pastoral support. They serve to offer students additional pastoral support for those of you experiencing extenuating issues which are impacting on your studies in some way - this might be personal/family reasons, health issues, financial worries or anything else which you need emotional support with.

Some comments from students who have used the ad hoc service recently and found it helpful are: -

“I was having some personal issues which were affecting my studies, and the practical suggestions I received helped to reduce my stress levels.”

“I did find it helpful as Coriander gave me various options to consider going forward with the course following life circumstances impacting my studies, and she put me in touch with the right people.”

“I found the service supportive and responsive.”

“I had personal struggles which made my studying experience hard. When speaking with Coriander, she listened to my issues very well, demonstrated understanding, supported me with good advice and even offered her personal experience for dealing with the issues I had. Overall, very positive experience with a SSM who is easy to talk to.”

Both formal and ad hoc sessions also cover guidance for students with known or self-suspected Learning Needs or other disabilities.

Ad hoc sessions will take place on the following dates for 2024 and can be arranged by emailing me directly: -

  • 19th March
  • 16th April
  • 14th May
  • 11th June
  • 2nd July
  • 17th September
  • 15th October
  • 12th November
  • 10th December

Formal sessions give you the students an opportunity to feedback on your experience of being a student at CNELM. The formal sessions dates for 2024 will be held from 17th – 21st June and from 2nd – 6th December and a Straw poll will be made available nearer the dates. A Zoom meeting will be set up for the session, which lasts for 15-30 minutes. If further time is required then this can be arranged via a separate, ad hoc session.

You are of course always welcome to email me directly with any queries, for example if you need to speak to me on any different date or need pastoral support outside of the ad hoc dates.

If anyone has any further questions regarding the role of these sessions, please do contact me.

Simple Gut Reset Book Review

Kate Neil reviews Helen's new book:
Helen Ross completed the BSc Hons Nutritional Science and Nutritional Therapy Practice Diploma programmes at CNELM in 2016 and has recently self-published a cookbook - The Simple Gut Reset. The book is beautifully illustrated and includes recipes that are simple, practical and enticing. All the recipes are gluten-free, free of refined sugar and mostly dairy-free.

The preceding chapters are a superb lead-in to the breakfast, dips and lunches, mains and sides dishes, salads, ferments and pickles and drinks. The early chapters expertly weave between Helen's personal experience with managing IBS and SIBO, and how this has benefited working with clients, alongside an easy to understand factual research evidenced approach to support a healthy gut microbiome using food as medicine.

Helen refers to her later recipes within the preceding chapters and how ingredients might support a healthy gut. Her inclusion of mindful eating, stress, the gut-brain connection and potential use of food adaptogens, alongside strategies for helping to keep on track, and getting back on track when life challenges takes us off track.

Throughout, Helen is mindful of varying needs and aims to make it clear when some foods may be suitable for some individuals and problematic for others. Helen recommends working with a suitably qualified practitioner to further personalise a dietary intervention and to explore the use of functional assessments to help identify gut imbalances and the strategic use of food supplements.

You can read a graduate interview with Helen below.

VOC's & Health

This is a fascinating article which explains more about how our smell and subtle changes in the VOC profiles we produce can provide clues about how healthy we are.
Probiotic Architecture

This very interesting article looks at the concept of probiotic architecture – integrating beneficial bacteria and microbiomes into the design and materials of buildings in order to support health. The article discusses how probiotic coatings in buildings can be used to actively break down pollutants, purify the air, and mitigate harmful allergens in our immediate environment.

Salmon & FSC's:
A recent study found that salmon contains 508 food-specific compounds (FSCs) which form metabolites associated with improved cardiometabolic health indicators. The researchers found increases in two salmon FSCs and two metabolites were associated with greater cardiometabolic health, evident by CHIs in the participants’ blood plasma. These cardiometabolic benefits included reductions in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B.

Diet & Immunity:

A new study suggests significant immune system responses to both ketogenic and vegan diets. Participants followed both diets for two weeks each. The ketogenic diet upregulated the adaptive immune response and oxidative phosphorylation was improved. The vegan diet elicited responses rooted in innate immunity. There were also significant changes in the abundance of the microbiomes of the participants associated with each diet.

B3 & CVD:
Recent research suggests that increased levels of vitamin B3 could reduce death from cardiovascular disease in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Participants with over 26.7 mg daily consumption of dietary niacin appeared to have a 30% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and 35% lower risk of all-cause mortality than participants who had lower dietary intakes.

Atlantic Diet & Metabolic Syndrome:
A recent study suggests that consuming the Atlantic diet may help reduce metabolic syndrome risk. Among the 574 participants, researchers found that participants significantly reduced their risk for metabolic syndrome after 6 months on the Atlantic Diet. They also found that this group was 42% less likely to develop an additional component of metabolic syndrome than the control group.
Fudgy Almond Butter Brownies

This recipe comes from Dr Mark Hyman and is well worth a try - absolutely delicious!

Ingredients:
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil, divided
  • 225g almond butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 150g maple syrup
  • 25g cassava flour
  • 25g 100% cacao powder, unsweetened
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of sea salt
Optional Topping

    •    1 tablespoon coconut oil
    •    60g 100% cacao bar, unsweetened
    •    Pinch of coarse sea salt

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line an 8x8 baking pan with parchment paper. Grease with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and set aside.

2. In a mixing bowl, mix almond butter and maple syrup together, until incorporated, then add the vanilla extract and eggs. Mix until combined.

3. Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Fold it all together and stir until no lumps remain. The mix should be sticky.

4. Pour the brownie batter into the prepared oiled baking pan; it will be very thick. Use the remaining 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to grease another sheet of parchment paper. Place the oiled parchment paper on top of the batter and press with your hands to spread the batter evenly until completely flattened.

5. Remove the top piece of parchment paper and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until inserting a toothpick into the centre comes out clean.

6. Wait 15 minutes until the brownies are cooled, then cut into squares.

7. For an optional topping, melt the coconut oil with chocolate and drizzle over the brownies. Then sprinkle with a pinch of coarse sea salt and enjoy!
