Welcome to the March/April edition of The Nutritional Supplement.

In the UK and much of the Northern hemisphere, Spring is finally here and soon we will be able to top up our vitamin D levels naturally. I always feel a surge of hope and joy at this time of year and hopefully 2021 will give us plenty to feel joyful about.

Happy reading - Coriander Stone

Nutritional Interventions for RA

Our alumni Daisy (Desislava) Ilchovska, who now runs her own virtual Nutritional Therapy Clinic - Optimal Health Nutrition - has just had her research on the topic of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Nutritional Interventions published in the prestigious Autoimmunity Reviews Journal.

The research suggested that potentially Vitamin D supplementation may not only ameliorate inflammation (through the well-studied NF-kB mechanism), but also have an effect on a NF-kB ligand RANKL, which is responsible for the bone destruction in the autoimmune disease.

Daisy says: ‘I’m absolutely thrilled that my research dissertation has been published. I re-trained as a Nutritional Therapist because I myself have Rheumatoid Arthritis and have seen first-hand the benefits of nutrition in the management of the disease and now, through this published research I can spread the word wider. I would like to thank everyone at CNELM and especially my research supervisor Michelle Barrow for the ongoing support and encouragement."
Podcast - Managing Anxiety

This 30 minute listen from Brené Brown, research professor at the University of Houston, discusses managing our day-to-day anxiety and how it impacts each of us. Brené discusses how anxiety can trigger over or under-functioning, why anxiety is contagious, and how we can cultivate a calm practice.
The Skin Microbiome

This is an interesting and timely article on the importance of the skin microbiome, considering the heavy use of topical antibacterials over the past year. The article looks at how the microbiome works from an inside-out and an outside-in perspective and how each impacts on the other.
Nutrition Key to Pandemic Resilience

This important BMJ article 'Nutrition is key to global pandemic resilience' well describes the challenges confronting nutrition and nutritional status and discusses the importance of optimal nutritional status as a defence in both communicable and non-communicable diseases. The author rightly challenges the reader to see the current pandemic as a wake up call and states that it has been estimated that the current pandemic could almost double the number of people suffering from acute hunger. This paper includes some interesting references to take you further into this subject.
Dr Edith Eger Podcasts
The past 12 months have been perhaps the most challenging many of us have ever faced. This podcast with Dr Chatterjee and Auschwitz survivor Dr Edith Eger on How to Discover Your Inner Power, at a time of division and confusion, is hugely inspiring and grounding. Listening to a voice like Dr Eger’s can help us make sense of the world around us and change our response to it, and her mantra of “Yes I am, Yes I can, Yes I will” cannot fail to give strength.

Dr Eger has also done another podcast with Russel Brand that you can listen to here and with Brené Brown here

Student Resources

This is a very concise and useful article for recapping what is important in building and maintaining a healthy immune system.

This podcast looks at how to protect our soil nutrients, ensure agricultural practices are sustainable, feed a growing population, and protect our arable land. Three panellists discuss promoting farming practices that are profitable, environmentally sound and good for communities as well as the challenges farmers face and how balanced crop nutrition and sustainable crop production can ensure that agricultural practices are sustainable.

A good summary of some recent findings around the gut-brain axis and which bacteria may improve specific disorders.

Avocados & Gut Microbiome:

Recent research - funded by The Hass Avocado Board - suggests that avocados may help balance the gut microbiome. The research involved 163 participants, some of whom included an avocado a day in their diet over a 12-week period. The participants who ate an avocado per day had an increased presence of healthful microbes in the stomach and intestines; they also excreted slightly more fat in their stools than the control group, indicating that they were absorbing fewer calories from food.

Omega 3:

There has been a wealth of research into the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids to health, including Covid-19, MS, cardiovascular, cancer and mental health, with mixed results. Most of the positive research focuses around omega 3's anti-inflammatory effects as the mechanism of action and scientists have generally concluded that consuming omega-3 during pregnancy may improve memory function in school-age children.

Diet & Mental Health:

Several observational studies have shown a link between diet quality and mental health. This study was one of the first randomized controlled trials to examine the role of diet in the treatment of depression. At the end of the study, those in the diet group had significantly greater improvements in depression symptoms. However, various meta-analyses have found a correlation, suggesting the need for further research in this area. In terms of supplementation, recent reviews of randomized controlled trials found omega-3 supplements to be effective in the treatment of anxiety and depression in adults. The correlation in trials seems to be the impact of healthy foods on inflammation, both systemically and neurologically.
Broccoli Stem Pesto

This recipe was sent to me by a student and is a combination of a BBC and an Instagram recipe.

Ingredients (serves 1-2):
1 broccoli stem
Handful basil leaves
Olive oil
Lemon juice (1/2 lemon)
1 tbsp pine nuts
1 garlic clove
1/2 tsp dried chilli flakes
1-2 tbsp grated parmesan or vegan cheese

Lightly steam the broccoli stem, then refresh with cold water to stop the cooking process. Put in a blender with the rest of the ingredients and blitz until smooth - you may need more or less oil to achieve the desired consistency. Add salt and pepper to taste.
