Welcome to the September/October edition of The Nutritional Supplement. The graduation ceremony took place in July at Middlesex University campus in London and was attended by both student and staff graduates – congratulations to all our recent graduates!

This edition we have some more news of the graduation ceremony from Dr Michelle Barrow and an inspiring graduate interview with Bronwyn Hudson to enjoy.

Happy reading!
Graduation 2019

Congratulations to all of our 2019 graduates, including staff members who graduated! Students who graduated included Venetia Mitchell, Juliana Bernardes, Jennifer Tindall, Jane Pugh, Lecinda van Niekerk, Nicola Baird, Sophie Nielsen, Rachel Hampson and Alexandra Emerson-White, and were joined by graduating staff members Dr Karin Seidler, Dr Michelle Barrow and Sian Jefferey. Dr James Neil, Catherine Broome and Indrani Saha also attended the ceremony in Middlesex University campus in London.

Michelle writes this about the ceremony:
"The 2019 graduation ceremony was a particularly special one with many students graduating as well as three members of staff. Michelle Barrow graduated with her DProf; she was the only person at the ceremony to be awarded a doctorate. Sian graduated with a MA in Teaching and Learning and was also awarded the post-graduate Teacher Education prize from MU. Dr Karin Seidler graduated alongside the other CNELM students with an MSc in Personalised Nutrition. 25 students attended the ceremony including some students from overseas. Dr James Neil, Catherine Broome and Indrani Saha formed part of the academic procession at the ceremony and were on the stage when the awards were being presented. A number of students and their families joined staff for drinks in the nearby pub afterwards.  It was a lovely day and certainly one I will remember for ever."

UK Sat Fat Advice

The UK government has released their updated advice around fatty acid intake recently – here is what the Alliance for Natural Health has to say about it. It would be very interesting to gather thoughts from – particularly – students living overseas – on how this advice differs from official government advice around the world and what your thoughts are on this issue.

The UK government SACN report can be seen here and a BBC report on saturated fats here

Please email me at coriander@cnelm.co.uk with your thoughts for the next edition.

A "Sustainable" Diet?

Following on from recent discussions around the benefits or otherwise of following a vegan diet, Michael Ash and Anthony Hanes at Clinical Education have published this article looking at the pros and cons of a vegan diet.

Discussion around veganism and its effects on both the environment and our health continues to emerge rapidly and our own ideas may alter depending on that. This paper appears to give a well-balanced view on a vegan diet in pregnancy and this is a good article on what a "sustainable diet" might look like.

Please continue to email me with your thoughts on this at coriander@cnelm.co.uk
Case Discussions

I would welcome a selection of brief reflections on your studies, student experience, or clinic or coaching clients that you think would be helpful to other students. We would really like to develop this section of the Student Newsletter over the coming year. Please email me at coriander@cnelm.co.uk with your input.

This edition’s case discussion comes from the TAP and discusses a 48-year old African American male with cardiovascular disease risk, depression and a history of rheumatoid arthritis

Read the case discussion here and please do send me your thoughts on this case study for discussion in the next edition at coriander@cnelm.co.uk
Clinical Practice Resource
For those of you who are already registered practitioners, Clinical Education has a very useful and informative clinical resource for client cases here. They recently moved from LinkedIn and this is their new site where you can post clinical questions or search through thousands of case studies for your own education.

Student Resources

The Royal Society of Arts (RSA) has released this report setting out ways for policymakers, business and communities to respond to the challenges we now increasingly face with food production, agriculture and farming, our health and that of the planet. Caroline Lucas, Green MP for Brighton Pavilion in the UK further discusses these issues based on the report here

This piece from the Alliance for Natural Health discusses bio-identical hormones and their place alongside the HRT market.

This video from TAP talks about an approach to brain injury. There is now substantial evidence to suggest that the gut microbiome undergoes major imbalance after any sort of concussion and that working on the gut within the first 2 weeks of brain injury can improve outcomes, even after stroke!

This discussion from TAP Expert Deanna Minich discusses how to break the cycle of emotional eating – something that we nutrition clinicians often experience with our clients.

Methionine & Tumour Growth

This study suggests a link between the amino acid methionine and the effectiveness of cancer therapies. When mice were fed a diet with reduced levels of methionine, tumour growth slowed compared with mice fed a standard diet. However, the authors of the study also suggest that restricting methionine could lead to tumour growth in certain cancers and advise caution in interpreting these results.

Vitamin A & Skin Cancer

A study suggesting a link between dietary vitamin A intake and skin cancer. The researchers found that participants who had higher dietary vitamin A intake had a lower risk of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. The study had some limitations but suggests the protective role of vitamin A against skin cancer.

Nuts May Improve Sexual Function in Men

New research suggests that men who eat two handfuls of nuts (almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts) per day showed improved erectile and sexual function. The trial took place over 14 weeks and compared to the control group, the 43 participants showed significant increases in sexual function, albeit self-reported.

Dark Chocolate Linked to Reduced Depression

Good news for most of us - recent research suggests a link between dark chocolate consumption and depression. The researchers studied 13,626 participants aged 20 years or older and assessed depressive symptoms using the Patient Health Questionnaire. They found that individuals who reported any dark chocolate consumption had 70% lower odds of depressive symptoms than those who did not report any chocolate consumption. This could be due to the anti-inflammatory effects of polyphenols in chocolate.
Crumbed Chicken

Please email me your favourite recipes to coriander@cnelm.co.uk and how you came to find them!

This recipe comes courtesy of The Alliance For Natural Health and is a healthy way to enjoy "breaded" chicken.

Ingredients:
4 x chicken breasts cut into strips (or substitute tempeh, tofu or firm fish)
4 tbsp desiccated coconut
4 tbsp ground almonds
Salt and pepper to taste
Grated zest of 1 lemon or lime or mixture of both
1 clove garlic crushed
OR
1 tsp each ground coriander, cumin, sumac
1/2 teaspoon chilli (or more if preferred)
OR
2 tsp za’atar spice

Method:
1. Preheat oven to 200°c (180°c for fan). Mix coconut, almonds, salt and pepper and chosen flavourings together in a bowl
2. Add the chicken strips and coat well. If using tempeh, tofu or firm fish, start by coating in beaten egg or coconut milk to help the crumbs stick.
3. Place the strips onto an oven tray, drizzle with olive oil, then bake until cooked through and coating is golden - around 20 - 30 minutes.
4. Serve with a green salad, steamed green beans and broccoli.

These freeze really well so can be made in advance and taken out when needed.
