AI & Food Choices

This is a fantastic BBC World podcast with CNELM's very own Dr James Neil, discussing Euzen and how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to design our diets using empirical predictions and how that might improve our health.
SSM Sessions

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself for those new students who may not be familiar with me and my role. As Student Support Manager (SSM), I offer both formal and ad hoc sessions to all students at various points throughout the year.

Formal bi-annual sessions offer students a formal opportunity to provide feedback on your experience of the course, which is then anonymously analysed and reported back to CNELM in order to enhance services to students.

Aspects of your studies covered in formal sessions include: -
  • Gauging whether you are on track with your study programme
  • If you generally are happy with the level of feedback received for assessments
  • If teaching and administrative staff are accessible and supportive
  • If the learning resources are accessible and suitable to your needs
The focus of the formal sessions is therefore mainly academic.

Ad hoc sessions run monthly throughout the year and provide confidential pastoral support. They serve to offer students additional pastoral support for those of you experiencing extenuating issues which are impacting on your studies in some way - this might be personal/family reasons, health issues, financial worries or anything else which you need emotional support with.

Both formal and ad hoc sessions also cover guidance for students with known or self-suspected Learning Needs or other disabilities.

Formal dates 2023:
  • 5th – 9th June
  • 4th – 8th December
Formal sessions give you the students an opportunity to feedback on your experience of being a student at CNELM. The formal sessions for 2023 will run from 5th – 9th June and 4th – 8th December and June sessions can now be booked via this linked poll https://strawpoll.com/polls/NoZr30qKry3

A Zoom meeting will be set up for the session, which lasts for 15-30 minutes. If further time is required then this can be arranged via a separate, ad hoc session.

This poll is ONLY for the formal sessions; if you require an ad hoc pastoral appointment with me at another time, please email me directly at Coriander.Stone@cnelm.ac.uk

You are of course always welcome to email me directly with any queries, for example if you need pastoral support outside of the ad hoc dates.

Ad hoc sessions will take place on the following dates throughout the year and can be arranged by emailing me directly: -
  • 16th May
  • 13th June
  • 4th July
  • 12th September
  • 17th October
  • 14th November
  • 12th December
If anyone has any further questions regarding the role of these sessions, please do contact me directly.

Supplements & Nano-particles

Supplements are a bit of a minefield to say the least, especially ones with binders or added agents.

This article from the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) outlines why nano-particles such as titanium or silicon dioxide as well as zinc oxide may be best avoided.
Aging & The Microbiome

Healthy aging has become a key focus among many integrative practitioners and their patients.

In this podcast, nutritionist Ross Pelton describes a paper he recently had published, describing the science behind the microbiome theory of aging and how this can be applied to clinical practice.

Gut Microbiome Research Studies

London South Bank University (LSBU) are running two new Gut Microbiome Brain Studies that are beginning shortly and are seeking participants for the research studies to investigate the impact of CBD infused vegan chocolate and proprietary herbal tea blend on colonic microbiota, cognitive function & emotional health.

Both are online studies and do not require visits to LSBU.

Study 1: is a CBD-infused vegan chocolate and Study 2: is a blend of tea consisting of herbs specifically chosen for their known brain and digestive health properties.

The researchers are now recruiting for participants. Participants can access their gut microbiota stool results (x2) at the end of the study.

Contact Adri Bester bestera@lsbu.ac.uk or Susanne Macgregor on macgregs@lsbu.ac.uk to take part in this unique learning opportunity.
ADHD & Food

This is an interesting discussion on the effects of diet on ADHD, with Dr Duane Mellor, Nutrition and Evidence Based Medicine Lead at Aston Medical School and Dr Alex Richardson, Founder of the UK charity Food and Behaviour Research.

They ask what role nutrition may have in a condition like ADHD and whether it’s a crucial part of managing the condition, a red herring, or one important cog in a very complex wheel.

Walnuts & Cardiovascular Disease:
Recent research suggests that walnuts increase levels of L-homoarginine in the gut, which may lower the risk for cardiovascular disease. The researchers also found higher levels of Gordonibacter bacteria in the walnut diet group, which is responsible for metabolising plant compounds. Dysbiosis index values were also improved after including walnuts in their diets for 6 weeks.

Green Tea & Depression:

New research suggests that matcha green tea powder may have antidepressant effects, in stress-prone mice at least. In the stress-susceptible mice, matcha tea was associated with an improvement in depression-like symptoms whereas it had no impact on the stress-resistant mice. This appeared to be due to the impact on dopamine in the stress-susceptible mice.

Gut Bacteria & Immunotherapy:
This recent research looked at how gut bacteria diversity influences immunotherapy immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment efficacy in a mouse model of melanoma. The researchers administered ICI therapy to mice with and without melanoma tumours and found that ICI treatment increased inflammation in the digestive tract, which allowed certain bacteria to travel to lymph nodes near the tumour and tumour site, where they activated a set of immune cells that killed the tumour cells. They also found that antibiotic exposure reduced gut microbiota movement to lymph nodes, and decreased immune cell levels – but certain strains of bacteria reversed this antibiotic-dependant inefficacy.

Mediterranean Diet & Cognition in MS:
Researchers have investigated the effects of the Mediterranean diet on cognition among patients with MS and found that patients who most closely followed the Mediterranean diet had a 20% lower risk for cognitive impairment than those who adhered to it least. The authors suggest that the mechanisms whereby the Mediterranean diet might help protect cognition include possible anti-inflammatory and or anti-oxidant effects, reduction in co-morbidities that might affect cognition such as hypertension, and substitution of healthier foods for foods that may contribute to co-morbidities or adversely impact cognition e.g. ultra processed foods.
Lamb Albondigas with Oloroso & Piquillo

Peppers

Serves 4

Ingredients:

500g lamb mince
30g fresh white breadcrumbs
2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
1 tsp sweet smoked Pimentón de la Vera
3 tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley
1 tbsp finely chopped fresh oregano
Finely grated zest of 1 lemon
1 egg
Salt and black pepper
1 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, peeled and finely chopped
150ml oloroso sherry
2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes
2 tsp sherry vinegar
1 x 240g jar piquillo peppers, drained and sliced
Crusty bread or rice, to serve

In a bowl, put the lamb mince, breadcrumbs, garlic, pimentón, a third of the parsley, the oregano, lemon zest and egg. Season well, mix with your hands to combine, then shape into 20 small balls.

Put the oil in a large frying pan on a medium-high heat, then fry the meatballs, turning often, for about five or so minutes, until browned all over. Transfer to a plate, leaving the fat behind in the pan.

Add the onion to the pan, cook, stirring, for 10 minutes, until softened, then add the sherry and bubble until reduced by half. Add the tomatoes, season generously and leave to bubble for 10 minutes. Stir in the vinegar, then return the meatballs to the pan along with the peppers, and leave to cook, stirring gently from time to time, for 15 minutes, until the sauce thickens.

Scatter over the remaining chopped parsley and serve with crusty bread or rice.
