Student Achievements

CNELM is proud to share BSc Nutritional Science student Katherine's informative article on GI distress in endurance athletes, which she has had published in the latest edition of Functional Sports Nutrition magazine.

Katherine gives some insight into the experience below and her article can be seen online here

"I was advised by a few people on the benefits of picking a title for my research project that not only would be of interest to me but also one that may be of use in my future line of work. Whilst I do not intend to practise in sports nutrition alone as I love the complexity that many diseases present, due to my other main interest of long-distance triathlon (and specifically running) and the fact that the majority of my friends and contacts are 'athletes' in one form or another, GI distress in endurance athletes ticked many boxes. I have experienced GI distress personally and certainly know many others who have experienced it to quite a debilitating degree so I knew it was an area of active clinical relevance.

I subscribed to the Functional Sports Nutrition Magazine before I began at CNELM - as soon as I had connected the words 'functional' and 'sport' and also followed Ian Craig (the Editor) on social media. I had made contact with Ian in relation to his new certified functional sports nutrition course at Integrative Sports Nutrition and then simply had an idea while running one day that I should just email him and ask if he would be interested in a 'readable' article summarising my dissertation for his magazine. Having read the magazine for a number of years I had a good idea of what would be of interest and I knew he had a wide range of contributing writers. The worst that could happen was that he would say no. However, having shared my dissertation with him, he said yes. That was it really - all I had to do then was write it.

As a bonus of taking the initiative to contact him and write the article, Ian then offered me an opportunity to be a guest lecturer on his course during the half day on 'GI distress in Endurance Athletes'. Here I was definitely outside of my comfort zone but how could I say no to such an opportunity at this point in my future career? One thing often leads to another and you can never have too many contacts. It has also given me an insight into the amount of work that goes into lecturing and I hold a new-found respect for all my CNELM lecturers!"

Ian Craig is a CNELM graduate and was prior module leader for Personalised Sports Nutrition and continues to contribute to the module. Ian specialises in integrative sports nutrition and is the leader of the IHCAN Sports Nutrition annual conference and the founder of the Centre for Integrative Sports Nutrition in South Africa. Ian also recently published his first book, 'Wholesome Nutrition'. His website with more information can be found here
Food for Thought

The Swiss Re Institute have delivered two days of lectures on the impact on disease of nutrition, which they acknowledge is often neglected and is one of the biggest drivers of the global epidemic of chronic lifestyle diseases. However, the evidence base for dietary advice is beset with poor quality science and unresolved controversy.

Panellists such as Dr Aseem Malhotra, Dr Tim Spector and Zoë Harcombe present talks in this fascinating and worthwhile resource.
GDPR

On 25th May 2018 the Data Protection Act was replaced by the European General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).

As you know CNELM prior to and since the 25th May has been in regular communication with all students.

All communication updates to-date sent by email to all students have been added to Moodle Essential Documents Section 4 - GDPR and include:

Extenston and Deferment GDPR Alert
Student Folders and Files Alert
GDPR and Communicating by Email/Secure Compose Email Guide
Clinic Updates
Coaching Updates
Updates to Confirmation Agreements
Third Party Fee Payers Contract

If you are a student in practice as a nutritional therapist then you will no doubt be following the BANT guidance which can be found here
Case Discussions

I would welcome a selection of brief reflections on your studies, student experience, or clinic or coaching clients that you think would be helpful to other students. We would really like to develop this section of the Student Newsletter over the coming year. Please email me at coriander@cnelm.co.uk with your input.

This month’s case discussion is from the TAP Integrative and focuses on a woman with IBS and PCOS seeking pregnancy. Read the case discussion here and send me your thoughts on this case study for discussion in the next edition at coriander@cnelm.co.uk
Children's Food Campaign

Junk Ad Free London:

On the 11th May the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced that as part of his new London Food Strategy, he wants to ban all junk food ads on Transport for London.

No more bus shelter or tube ads could be a reality in the near future. However, it's still just a proposal, so if you would like to add your voice to this campaign and help make it reality, you can send an e-action to the Mayor's London Food Strategy proposals here
Your Contributions - RSM Conference

Esther Donnoff, MSc + NTPD Graduate 2017:

I recently spent a fantastic day at the Royal Society of Medicine attending a meeting entitled "The microbiome: manipulation, application and reaction".

I was really captivated listening to the latest research in this exploding area of medicine and it was good to see a mix of practitioners including GPs, psychiatrists, surgeons, researchers, dietitians, nutritional therapists and students.

I particularly found Dr Kate Lawrence’s presentation fascinating, as she explained the effect of microbiome diversity on schizophrenia and depression and described the clinical trial she is conducting on children with ADHD.

As nutritional therapists, we know that metabolic health can be influenced by the gut microbiota, but it was really interesting to hear Dr Carl Hulston discuss his latest research using prebiotics to alter the ratio of Firmicutes to Bifidobacterium, as well as his explanation of the mechanisms by which the bacteria in the gut can affect insulin resistance. It is always useful to have the latest research to use in client paperwork!

I was pleasantly surprised listening to Dr Sarah Rae, a consultant rheumatologist, discussing her use of probiotics in rheumatology, and the success she has had in rheumatoid arthritis patients. I have always thought that NHS doctors were not interested in nutrition, but she very eloquently talked about lifestyle and nutrition interventions to manipulate the microbiome!

Dr Colin Hill brilliantly explained the latest developments on the probiotic front, including microbial consortia, which are isolated spores taken from a healthy microbiome and inserted into patients; and pharmabiotics, which are the molecules produced by the bacteria made into a tabletted format.

All in all, a fascinating day, and really encouraging to see these topics being discussed in mainstream medicine.

If anyone has any insights to add to this, please do email me at coriander@cnelm.co.uk to be included in the next edition.

Diet, Nutrition, Physical Activity &

Cancer

AICR’s newest report, Diet, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer: a Global Perspective has been released.

The full report, which is more than 12,000 pages including the systematic literature reviews, is be available on-line here. The Print Summary is available to provide clinicians with an accessible overview of the evidence behind the work and is an invaluable reference tool.

Pukka, ASA, "Detox"

Pukka has been told by the ASA that it can no longer label its tea “Detox” as an unauthorised health claim. Pukka have fought back, saying that they will continue to sell it under that label as the health claim applies only to advertising, but have agreed to alter the name after 2020.

What are your thoughts around this recent development? Are the ASA being too rigid, or should terms such as “detox” be removed from food product labels? You can read more on this story here.

Email me at coriander@cnelm.co.uk with your thoughts.

Student Resources

This webinar gives some great insight into emotional eating and gives streamlined techniques, tips, and tools that clinicians can incorporate into clinic.

This project has been set up with Mapmygut and Tim Spector, Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at King’s College and provides samples and understanding of the bacteria in our gut using state of the art gut microbiome sequencing technology.

May saw a special issue of the Natural Medicine Journal, focusing on cognition and mental health, with some interesting articles around these issues.

Katarzyna Wilk, Associate Director, European Affairs from The Whitehouse Consultancy explores the challenges surrounding the regulatory framework for the sports nutrition industry and explains why planning now for a post Brexit market is essential.

The ANH have released their first revision of the ANH-Intl Food4Health guide, which may prove a useful resource in clinic.

This research suggests that women with adequate levels of vitamin D are more likely to fall pregnant and have a successful pregnancy. Those women with higher vitamin D concentrations (75 nmol/L or more) prior to conception were associated with an increased likelihood of pregnancy and live birth. For each 25 nmol/L increase in 25[OH]D concentrations, the risk of pregnancy loss was lower. Researchers hypothesise that the immune-modulating effects of vitamin D may play a role in improving the maternal–fetal immunologic response, thus increasing the chances of fetal survival.

Vitamin D & Breast Cancer

New research suggests that adequate levels of serum vitamin D can reduce the risk of developing post-menopausal breast cancer. The researchers found that participants with with higher blood levels of 25(OH)D that were above 60 ng/ml had one-fifth the risk of breast cancer compared to those with less than 20 ng/ml and that higher levels of vitamin D correlated to lower risk of breast cancer.

B3 & Parkinson's

New research suggests that nicotinamide riboside, a form of vitamin B3, may help prevent cell death involved in Parkinson's disease by improving their mitochondrial health. Researchers fed laboratory-grown nerve cells with nicotinamide riboside to trigger growth of new cell mitochondria and then tested this again on fruit flies. They added additional B3 to the food of one one group of two groups of flies with a genetic predisposition to Parkinson's and saw significantly fewer dead nerve cells and longer retention of mobility in the flies that received the vitamin, compared with those that did not.
