CNELM Grads Accolade

CNELM is proud to share the news that Pioneering clinic Brainstorm Health® has recently received a prestigious award "Best Children's Nutritional Therapy Clinic in Southwest England” in the 2023 Lux Life Health, Beauty and Wellness Awards to recognise their commitment to transforming lives of young people struggling with neuropsychiatric conditions, including autism, PANDAS and PANS.*

Brainstorm Health® founder Stella Chadwick and practitioner Coriander Stone graduated from CNELM with First Class honours in Nutritional Therapy in 2014 and 2013 respectively.  The press release for this achievement is below: -

Stella Chadwick says, "This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team in providing exceptional care and support to our patients and their families."

Chadwick goes on to explain how the innovative clinic came to be. “Our journey began with a personal experience that changed everything. When my daughter was 4.5 years old, she caught scarlet fever, and our world turned upside down. She faced compulsions, sensory issues, anxiety, and more, leaving us feeling lost and hopeless”.

“Like many parents, I refused to give up”, Chadwick says. “I went back to university and studied Nutritional Therapy and Functional Medicine. As I applied what I learned, something extraordinary happened. My daughter slowly began to regain her health and vitality. It was a moment of pure hope and inspiration”.

“Today, I am proud to say that my daughter is thriving and will soon begin her studies at Oxford University. This remarkable personal transformation serves as a testament to the power of resilience in the face of adversity.”

After a decade of unwavering commitment, Brainstorm Health® has emerged as a leader in its field, employing cutting-edge nutritional approaches and evidence-based practices to help more than 2,500 children and young people to date. Practitioners’ expertise extends to addressing the unique health needs of individuals on the autism spectrum and those facing challenges associated with PANDAS (Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal infection), PANS (Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders), and other neurological conditions.

Chadwick concludes, "At Brainstorm Health®, we firmly believe in the potential of every child and young adult we serve. Our holistic approach combining nutritional therapy and functional medicine aims to unlock young people’s potential and enhance their overall quality of life."

For parents who may be feeling lost or overwhelmed, Brainstorm Health® extends a message of hope. They urge parents to reach out and embark on a journey of transformation.

Congratulations to Stella and the Team at Brainstorm Health®.

*PANS/PANDAS

PANS is a neuropsychiatric condition which is triggered by a misdirected immune response to a variety of triggers, resulting in characteristic symptoms, including anxiety, tics, behavioural regression and motor or sensory abnormalities.

PANDAS is a subset of PANS. Similarly, it is a neuropsychiatric condition which is triggered by a misdirected immune response to a Streptococcal infection. Resulting symptoms typically include severe OCD in addition to the symptoms associated with PANS.

Benefits of Green Space

Most of us know that that spending time in green space is beneficial for our health on more than one level. There is now an exciting body of research which is raising awareness of the mental and physical health benefits of green space and the underlying mechanisms.

This recent publication suggests that maternal exposure to green space positively influences the composition of protective human milk oligosaccharides in breast milk, which may influence the health of the infant. This study provides yet another reason to prioritise daily contact with nature – which has also been shown in research to benefit focus and brain function – great for studying!

Precision Nutrition

This article contains a few sub-articles and podcasts on Precision Nutrition, where we are with it and what the future may hold.

Vegetables & Fruit Kidney Disease:
Recent research suggests that eating more vegetables and fruits is associated with a lower risk of death in people with chronic kidney disease. Compared to participants who ate vegetables and fruits every day, participants who never or rarely consumed them had a 60% higher risk of dying from any cause..

Blueberries & Cognition:

This research suggests that eating a cup of wild blueberries a day leads to improved executive function, strengthened short-term memory and faster reaction times. Participants who had freeze-dried wild blueberry powder for 12 weeks also saw a reduction in systolic blood pressure and improved blood vessel function compared to placebo participants, likely due to anthocyanins in blueberries.

Fried Foods & Depression:
Research suggesting a link between fried foods consumption and an increase in depression and anxiety. The researchers found that those consuming more than one serving of fried food per day had a 12% higher risk of anxiety and a 7% higher risk for depression than non-consumers, likely due to chronic exposure to acrylamide which is produced when certain carbohydrates are fried at high temperatures.

Soda & T2 Diabetes:
New research suggests that replacing soda with water, coffee or tea can reduce a person’s risk of death from type 2 diabetes by more than 20%. The research suggested that those who consumed the most sugar-sweetened beverages regularly had a 20% higher risk of death from any cause compared to those who drank the fewest types of these beverages and that people who drank the most sugary drinks had a 25% higher risk of cardiovascular disease and a 29% higher risk of cardiovascular disease-related death. Those who drank artificially sweetened beverages were also associated with lower mortality, but to a far lesser extent, with research suggesting that artificial sweeteners are also associated with heart conditions, metabolic issues, and liver problems.
Whipped Feta Dip with Cumin & Lemon

Serves 8

Ingredients:

200g block feta
4 tbsp thick Greek yoghurt
Lemon juice and zest
½ garlic clove, peeled and grated
Dried red chilli flakes
Salt and black pepper
1 tsp toasted cumin seeds
1 tsp Greek oregano (or other dried oregano)
Extra-virgin olive oil

Put the feta in a food processor with two tablespoons of the yoghurt and a squeeze of lemon juice, and blitz to loosen.

Empty into a bowl, fold through the remaining yoghurt, add the garlic, a pinch of chilli, and season with salt and pepper. It should be a similar thickness and texture to hummus – add a little more yoghurt to thicken, or lemon juice to loosen, if need be.

Top with the cumin, oregano, a generous zesting of lemon, another pinch of chilli flakes and serve.

Helen has a wealth of experience to share. The content of her Masterclass is highly relevant for nutritional therapy practitioners. This Masterclass on the psychology of emotional eating is for professionals of all disciplines whose work involves helping people change how they eat. Emotional eating is associated with decreased quality of life, increased calorie intake and drop-out from weight loss programmes. Clients attempting to lose weight may give up because of difficulties with regulating unpleasant feelings and find that they turn to highly palatable calorific foods. In this course we focus on evidence-based ways of helping your clients discover ways of reducing their reliance on food to deal with difficult feelings. Practical, simple strategies which have good outcome results are covered in this Masterclass and you will be able to put them into practice immediately and enhance the quality of the work you’re able to do with your clients. Please note that we don’t address how to work with eating disorders in this Masterclass.
