For those of you in Northern climes who would like to increase your sunshine, we also have a fantastic full-time job opportunity for a newly qualified NT in Gozo, Malta, which you can see more about in the classifieds section.

Enjoy!

Your Contributions
RSM's Critical Appraisal and Research Methods  Course, by Jennifer Tindall, BSc + NTPD

On the 22nd September I attended the RSM's Critical Appraisal course. It was a really informative day and I'm so glad I attended.

It was a little daunting to start with because it was a sea of medical doctors but us student Nutritional Therapists held our own! Dr Kamran Abbasi and Dr Chris Martyn who ran the course were extremely knowledgeable and answered everyone's questions without falter. They steered the day well especially when people got side tracked.

As a Nutrition student I didn't feel disrespected in any way and they were responsive to my contributions. We learnt a lot about how to read a paper and how to do statistical calculations - they mentioned in particular that confidence intervals are more important than p-values, as they can tell you more information.

They also discussed how to get published, how journals like the BMJ work and what peer reviewing means and provides as a system, which was really interesting. Following on from the Professional Enhancement open journal club at CNELM it has further inspired me to see if I can get my dissertation published!

Open journal clubs were mentioned several times so it must be something that doctors have to do, but it seems like a really good idea and may be something CNELM could implement on a regular basis in the future.

I would thoroughly recommend the course to anyone.

Review of Cytoplan: Making the Best of Stress, by Sharon Peck, BSc + NTPD

Last weekend I went to the London County Hall for the Cytoplan conference on stress. The day started well as I was greeted with my choice of gluten-free, dairy free breakfasts in the beautiful venue. There were a couple of fellow students from CNELM there as well as practitioners from other fields such as the two physiotherapists at the table. The morning presenter was Dr John Briffa, conventionally trained medical doctor who has practised holistic medicine for the last twenty years and was a funny and engaging speaker. He focused primarily on the HPA axis, addressing areas such as sleep, diet and breathing as ways to improve symptoms of ‘adrenal fatigue’. He touched on supplementation with adaptogens including withania sommnifera (ashwagandha), vitamins including C and B-complex, minerals including magnesium and other nutrients.

Lunch was several delicious gluten-free options served with a variety of vegetable and salad options, collected in stylish bento boxes.

The afternoon speaker was BANT chairman Miguel Toribio-Mateas, who focused on the pillars of brain health, which included quality sleep, a healthy diet, regular exercise and stress management. Another excellent, engaging speaker, he was able to draw on his experience as a yoga teacher, experimentation with various diets, clinical experience and current research to substantiate his presentation and provide anecdotal examples. He also touched on supplementation with adaptogens including ashwagandha and the nootropic bacopa monnieri (brahmi), key nutrients for mitochondrial function (including vitamin C, magnesium, folate, vitamins B6 and B12) ideally from dietary sources and the importance of a wide variety of vegetables to provide fibre for optimal functioning of the gut-brain axis.

Both presenters discussed possible tests that could be used with pros and cons so plenty of food for thought for the future.

Overall it was a great day, full of excellent information and a fantastic opportunity to connect with other nutritional therapists that I’d previously met at BANT Local Network meetings and Functional Forum Meetups. One thing that was slightly annoying was that the presenter’s slides didn’t match delegate packs, but we were sent soft copies of the slides after. Also it would have been nice to have received a video recording of the event, as is provided after IHCAN conferences, as there was so much information that I wasn’t able to note down. Having said that it was great value for money and thoroughly enjoyable so I’ll definitely be looking out for future Cytoplan conferences!

Student Resources

This month’s edition of the Natural Medicine Journal has some great article including the controversies around adrenal fatigue and its existence, probiotic supplementation for gestational diabetics and genomics for the gut and the brain.

The debate continues around seasonal vaccinations and flu season is officially upon us. What are your thoughts around flu vaccinations? Email me your thoughts to coriander@cnelm.co.uk by the 20th November to be included in the next edition.

For anyone who finds themselves defending the cost of Nutritional Therapy or other holistic therapies to people, this article sponsored by the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine makes some good arguments.

Gut Fungi for Weight Control

This research suggests that gut fungi are as important as bacteria in controlling weight. The mice in the study which were fed a high fat diet showed signs of obesity and weight gain as well as altered gut fungi, which increased in the control group fed a "standard" diet. However, animal trials typically use a specific blend of fat and results would be interesting if this trial was repeated in humans using organic plant and animal fats to compare the effect.

Micro-Nutrients for ADHD

This research suggests that micro-nutrient supplementation may be beneficial for ADHD symptoms. Whereas previous studies have concentrated on 1 micro-nutrient at a time, this new research looked at the synergistic effects of nutrients, studying multiple vitamins, minerals and amino acids in conjunction. forty seven percent of participants taking the micro nutrient complex over 10 weeks improved "much" or "very much", compared with twenty eight percent in the placebo group. Those who did not show improvement had no change in symptoms. The positive results warrants further investigation in this area.

Parasites Ward off Allergies

This new research sheds light on the mechanism by which parasites may protect against allergies - which I first heard about almost 10 years whilst studying at CNELM. Thee study found that the parasites release proteins which suppress allergic responses by blocking and modifying the IL-33 response.
