Gut Changes

This article discusses how the COVID lockdowns had an effect on all of our gut microbiomes, as we spent significantly less time exploring the outdoors and socialising. According to several recent studies, this extends to newborn babies, with those being born during the pandemic having a less diverse gut microbiome.

The next step for researchers is to investigate the long-term effects of these microbial differences on infant development. Whilst current studies are small-scale, the hope to broaden the sample size, so they can best understand the impact of the pandemic on children.

Gut Bacteria & Oestrogen

This is an interesting article on the effects of gut bacteria on depression in premenopausal women.

Klebsiella aerogenes has been found to degrade oestradiol and is more prevalent in the guts of premenopausal women with depression.

The Mystery of Salt

Our taste buds have long been understood to recognise sweet, sour, bitter, savoury-umami and salty, but there has always been a mystery understanding why the perfect amount of salt make food delectable, whereas an excessive amount is immediately noticeable and unpalatable.

This article explores how only recently have scientists discovered that there are actually two salt receptors to help us balance the importance of sodium in muscle and nerve function, but also anticipate the risks sodium can pose at higher levels. This "excessive salt" receptor still remains elusive, but scientists believe that once understood, it can help us develop better salt alternatives without the issues that too much salt can cause.

Adapting Funghi

This interesting article looks at how fungi thrive within a specific temperature range that doesn't align with the high internal body temperatures of mammals and how as climate change warms the planet, fungi are finding new habitats and new opportunities to adapt.

Understanding and addressing this fungal crisis is of newfound importance for researchers, as climate change continues to reshape the world's disease landscape.

Men are From Mars...?

This very interesting article explains, in highly comprehensible language, the differences between men and women’s brains potentially stemming from differing immune system responses throughout life, which in turn affects microglial activity and pruning.

It cites many studies to date suggesting that microglia may profoundly and very differently affect male to female brain development both in early and later life, starting in the womb with maternal infection.

Adri Bester (ION grad)

Our career profile this edition is not a CNELM grad, but Adri, who graduated from the ION in 1999. Adri also delivered the CNELM Food Science lectures several years ago.

Read her story here...

Fasting & Microbiome:
A new study suggests that both intermittent fasting and calorie reduction may benefit diversity in the microbiome. The researchers hypothesise that when the microbiome is allowed to rest, it is better able to repopulate.

DHA & Cognition:

A recent study suggests that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may help to mitigate some of the neuroinflammation and poor cognitive function in mice associated with saturated fats. The researchers examined the impact of palmitic acid against the protective factors of DHA and through cell analysis found that DHA may help mitigate palmitic-triggered inflammation.

Micronutrients & Neurological Conditions:
Recent research analyses the results of several studies on micronutrients and neurological conditions to assess the role of micronutrients in alleviating the symptoms of certain neurological conditions. The review concluded that in both Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, nutritional supplements of the vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, as well as folic acid, selenium and zinc could help with symptom management. The review also states that levels of homocysteine, vitamin D, copper and zinc should be closely monitored in people with Alzheimer’s and in people with Parkinson’s, levels of vitamins B6, D, E and homocysteine should be checked regularly.

Vitamin D & Cardiovascular Health:
A new study suggests a link between lower vitamin D levels and a higher risk of cardiovascular events. The study, which had 5,700 participants, found a correlation between better vitamin D levels and a lower risk for cardiovascular disease. However, the study did not find a link between lowered vitamin D levels and a heightened risk for deaths caused by either cardiovascular disease or overall causes.
Sweet Potato Brownies

Serves 4

Ingredients:

Makes 10 brownies
2 medium to large sweet potatoes (600g)
2/3 of a cup of ground almonds (80g)
1/2 a cup of buckwheat or brown rice flour (100g)
14 Medjool dates
4 tablespoons of raw cacao
3 tablespoons of pure maple syrup
A pinch of salt

Start by pre-heating the oven to 180C, then peel the sweet potatoes. Cut them into chunks and place into a steamer for about  twenty minutes, until they become really soft.

Once they are perfectly soft and beginning to fall apart remove them and add them to a food processor with the pitted dates.

Put the remaining ingredients into a bowl, before mixing in the sweet potato date combination. Stir well.

Place into a lined baking dish and cook for about twenty minutes, until you can pierce the brownie cake with a fork bringing it out dry.

Remove the tray and allow it to cool for about ten minutes – this is really important as it needs this time to stick together. Remove the brownies from the tray, leaving it another few minutes before cutting them into squares.

Helen has a wealth of experience to share. The content of her Masterclass is highly relevant for nutritional therapy practitioners. This Masterclass on the psychology of emotional eating is for professionals of all disciplines whose work involves helping people change how they eat. Emotional eating is associated with decreased quality of life, increased calorie intake and drop-out from weight loss programmes. In this course we focus on evidence-based ways of helping your clients discover ways of reducing their reliance on food to deal with difficult feelings. Practical, simple strategies which have good outcome results are covered in this Masterclass and you will be able to put them into practice immediately and enhance the quality of the work you’re able to do with your clients. Please note that we don’t address how to work with eating disorders in this Masterclass. Professional Accreditation. This Masterclass is approved for 6 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by: British Psychological Society (BPS), British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT), UK & International Health Coaches Association (UKIHCA).
