Epigenetics & Healthcare

The Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) have put together a blueprint for health system sustainability, based on epigenetics and the ultimate objective of which is to facilitate a transition to future-fit health systems that put the individual and their community at the heart.

The blueprint model provides three levels of assessment (self-assessed, practitioner-guided and biomedical testing) and you can also read more about this system here.

ANH’s new health e-learning platform also launched in October which you can find out more about here.

Life of Soil

This meditative and intriguing video shows us how the soil beneath us not only enriches the food we eat, providing the nutrients we need, but how the beauty of fertile soil is often underappreciated.

The captivating audio-visual CGI journey through the depths of soil is complemented by the sounds of soil from the Sounding Soil project, and makes for a blissful 4 minutes of calm and reflection.

Gut-Brain Axis

This short podcast from BBC sounds explores the vagus nerve and discusses just how much influence our bodies have over our minds.

Alzheimer's Phenotype:

Recent research suggests that a leaky blood brain barrier may be an additional factor in involved in the development of Alzheimer's disease. The researchers found that when the amyloid-beta proteins made in the livers of test mice combined with fats and travelled to the brain, they interfered with the proper functioning of the brain’s capillaries. This dysfunction in the blood-brain barrier led to the protein-fat complexes leaking from the blood into the brain, resulting in inflammation.

IBD & Mental Health:

Recent research suggests that impaired communication between the gut and the brain may be partly responsible for poor mental health in IBD. The new study found that inflammation in the gut may close a key gateway in this communication system that controls the exchange of signals between the blood and cerebrospinal fluid, presumably to prevent inflammation from spreading to the brain, and that this disrupted memory and caused anxiety.

Dementia & Personality:

A new study finds that neuroticism increases the likelihood of developing amyloid plaques and tau tangles, and that being conscientious reduces the likelihood of developing them. The research suggested that people with high neuroticism or low conscientiousness scores were more likely to have developed amyloid plaques and tau tangles. People with high conscientiousness or low neuroticism scores were less likely to have them.
