MOJU Prebiotics

A recent study co-funded by the London South Bank University and the European Regional Development Fund and commissioned by MOJU suggests that prebiotic shots have a positive and longer lasting impact on gut health than first perceived.

The study specifically looked at MOJU’s Prebiotic Shot and the health benefits of taking it on a daily basis. The results suggested a significant increase in gut microbiome alpha diversity, a common indicator for assessing gut microbiota health. The research also showed overall improvements in Bifidobacterium in all participants. These health benefits were ongoing and continued up to 21 days after taking prebiotics, suggesting a clear link between ingesting a blend of different prebiotic fibres and the positive effect on a healthy and functioning gut.

Senior Food Technologist Adri Bester from London South Bank University, said: “Unlike our genetics, we can influence which bacteria live in our gut. While some of the factors that affect the bacteria that live in our gut are difficult to change - like genetics, stressful events, or illness - we can modify and control our lifestyle behaviours. By conducting the study, it has shown us clearly that there is a link between taking a prebiotic and the positive effect that this can have with supporting a healthy and functioning gut. In addition to the demonstrable gut microbiome health benefits of the MOJU Prebiotic Shot, the shotgun metagenome analyses revealed interesting findings of advanced beneficial potential, including colon cancer. We know that as a world population we do not consume enough fibre in our diets, and consumers of all ages cite improving gut and digestive health as one of the top three benefits they want from their diet. Our study demonstrates that the MOJU Prebiotic Shot can be a convenient product to top up dietary fibres and improve gut and digestive health for any adult age and gender.”

There will be an interview with Adri Bester in the next edition of The Nutritional Supplement, where she talks more about this study.

BDNF

This article from the ANH looks at BDNF and how it improves brain function and plasticity, as well as ways to increase levels of it naturally, through diet and lifestyle.
King Charles III & Food Industry

This 30 minute podcast discusses the impact of King Charles III on the food industry as a high-profile figure talking about things like climate change, pollution and organic produce. It also discusses why he was he so focused on the environment before he became king, how influential he has been and how things will change now that he is king.
AgRP Neurons & Appetite

This fascinating article discusses AgRP neurons, which regulate appetite. By understanding how these neurons are activated and deactivated, we can understand why some people may have poorer appetite control and satiety signals.

An especially interesting part of this mechanism is the vagal nerve activation of AgRP neurons in response to fat reaching the gut. In people who have a sub-optimal vagal nerve response, this could theoretically impact appetite control.
Viral Bacteriophages

This is a fantastic article on the huge number of viruses found in babies stools and the protective effect that the viral bacteriophages have.

The researchers put together an atlas of infant gut DNA virus diversity and found 248 families of which only 16 were previously known.

Probiotics & Cognition:
Recent research suggests that treatment with a probiotic could help people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) regain cognitive function. Participants with cognitive impairment received a daily probiotic of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG for three months, after which time their scores on cognitive tests improved. The researchers also found substantial levels of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, as well as a reduction in the amount of Prevotella, often observed in people with cognitive decline, in participants stool analysis..

Omega 3 & Hearing:

New research suggests that omega 3 fatty acids may reduce age-related hearing loss. The scientists found that middle-aged and older adults with higher DHA levels were 8-20% less likely to report age-related hearing issues than those with lower DHA levels.

Strawberries & Cognition:
New research suggests that strawberries may help improve cognitive function and blood pressure. The researchers found that participants who ate equivalent to two servings of fresh strawberries per day increased their cognitive processing speed by 5.2%, lowered their systolic blood pressure by 3.6% and increased their antioxidant capacity by 10.2% when compared to controls. The research was funded by the California Strawberry Commission.

Ultra-Processed Foods & T2 Diabetes:
A new study suggests that ultra-processed foods may cancel out the benefits of a Mediterranean diet in type 2 diabetes. The study collected data from 24,325 people,1,065 of who had type 2 diabetes and were followed for over 11 years. The researchers found that individuals who ate the most ultra-processed foods had a higher risk of death from any cause and from cardiovascular disease compared to those who ate the least ultra-processed foods, with the risk increasing with increased ultra-processed food consumption.
White Bean & Garlic Soup with Miso &

Mushrooms

Serves 4

Ingredients:

2 tbsp olive oil
4 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
1½-2 red onions, peeled and minced (260g net)
2 tbsp shiro or sweet white miso
2 tsp ground black pepper
170g cremini (AKA brown) mushrooms, sliced
425g can white beans, rinsed and drained
1 tbsp oyster sauce, or 2 tsp low-sodium soy sauce
Fine sea salt
For the garnish
2 tbsp sesame oil (for a stronger flavour, use toasted sesame oil)
1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
2 tbsp spring onions, both white and green parts, thinly sliced

Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over a medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant - about 45 seconds – then add the onion and sauté for about six minutes, until it just starts to turn golden brown.

Reduce the heat to low, add the miso and black pepper, and cook for about a minute, until the miso just starts to turn light brown. Add the mushrooms and cook, stirring, for about three minutes, until plump. Add the beans, stir in 840ml water and the oyster sauce, then turn up the heat to medium-high and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer, cover and cook for 15 minutes, until the beans are almost falling apart.

Remove the pan from the heat, reserve half a cup of the bean–mushroom mixture and blend the rest until smooth and creamy; if the mixture seems too thick, add a little more water. Add the reserved bean-mushroom mixture to the soup, taste and season with salt, if need be.

To serve, ladle into bowls, drizzle the warm soup with the sesame oil and sprinkle over the sesame seeds and spring onions.

  • CNELM is pleased to be sharing the link here for the Masterclass with Dr Helen McCarthy. Dr Helen McCarthy is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and is a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Bristol. Helen has a wealth of experience to share. The content of her Masterclass is highly relevant for nutritional therapy practitioners. This Masterclass on the psychology of emotional eating is for professionals of all disciplines whose work involves helping people change how they eat. Emotional eating is associated with decreased quality of life, increased calorie intake and drop-out from weight loss programmes. Clients attempting to lose weight may give up because of difficulties with regulating unpleasant feelings and find that they turn to highly palatable calorific foods. In this course we focus on evidence-based ways of helping your clients discover ways of reducing their reliance on food to deal with difficult feelings. Practical, simple strategies which have good outcome results are covered in this Masterclass and you will be able to put them into practice immediately and enhance the quality of the work you’re able to do with your clients. Please note that we don’t address how to work with eating disorders in this Masterclass. Professional Accreditation. This Masterclass is approved for 6 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by: British Psychological Society (BPS), British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT), UK & International Health Coaches Association (UKIHCA).
