Happy New Year and welcome to the January/February edition of The Nutritional Supplement!

In this edition I introduce myself as Student Support Manager to students who have joined the January cohort and we have a graduate interview from Jennifer Tindall, who left CNELM as a staff member only recently.

There are also some fascinating articles and research to dive into.

Happy reading - Coriander Stone

SSM Sessions

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself for those new students who may not be familiar with me and my role. As Student Support Manager (SSM), I offer both formal and ad hoc sessions to all students at various points throughout the year.

Formal bi-annual sessions offer students a formal opportunity to provide feedback on your experience of the course, which is then anonymously analysed and reported back to CNELM in order to enhance services to students.

Aspects of your studies covered in formal sessions include: -
  • Gauging whether you are on track with your study programme
  • If you generally are happy with the level of feedback received for assessments
  • If teaching and administrative staff are accessible and supportive
  • If the learning resources are accessible and suitable to your needs
The focus of the formal sessions is therefore mainly academic.

Ad hoc sessions run monthly throughout the year and provide confidential pastoral support. They serve to offer students additional pastoral support for those of you experiencing extenuating issues which are impacting on your studies in some way - this might be personal/family reasons, health issues, financial worries or anything else which you need emotional support with.

Some comments from students who have used the ad hoc service recently and found it helpful are: -

“I was having some personal issues which were affecting my studies, and the practical suggestions I received helped to reduce my stress levels.”

“I did find it helpful as Coriander gave me various options to consider going forward with the course following life circumstances impacting my studies, and she put me in touch with the right people.”

“I found the service supportive and responsive.”

“I had personal struggles which made my studying experience hard. When speaking with Coriander, she listened to my issues very well, demonstrated understanding, supported me with good advice and even offered her personal experience for dealing with the issues I had. Overall, very positive experience with a SSM who is easy to talk to.”

Both formal and ad hoc sessions also cover guidance for students with known or self-suspected Learning Needs or other disabilities.

Ad hoc sessions will take place on the following dates for 2023 and can be arranged by emailing me directly: -
  • 10th January
  • 7th February
  • 14th March
  • 18th April
  • 16th May
  • 13th June
  • 4th July
  • 12th September
  • 17th October
  • 14th November
  • 12th December

Formal sessions give you the students an opportunity to feedback on your experience of being a student at CNELM. The formal sessions dates for 2023 will be held from 5th – 9th June and from 4th – 8th December and a Doodle poll will be made available nearer the dates. A Zoom meeting will be set up for the session, which lasts for 15-30 minutes. If further time is required then this can be arranged via a separate, ad hoc session.

You are of course always welcome to email me directly with any queries, for example if you need to speak to me on any different date or need pastoral support outside of the ad hoc dates.

If anyone has any further questions regarding the role of these sessions, please do contact me.
Nature's Healing Benefits

This article outlines how spending even 1 hour in nature has multiple health benefits, ranging from lower blood pressure, reduced anxiety and depression, improved mood, better focus, better sleep, better memory, and faster healing, with research showing reduced activity in the amygdala after a walk in the woods in 63 volunteers.

The Sat Fat Paradox?

This interesting look at the research around saturated fats and increased incidence of CVD concludes that saturated fats are not associated with an increase in CVD, even though it is related to a slight increase in some cases of increased LDL cholesterol. The article looks deeper into the supposed paradox of saturated fats and heart health and hypothesises about the reasons for its conclusions.

Online Relaxation Sessions

Nicola Pearson holds these relaxation sessions via Zoom every Monday 10.00-10.15am and Wednesday 10.00 – 10.15am. These sessions differ each week and blend gentle breathing techniques, calming guided relaxations and/or sleep yoga.

Feel free to wrap yourself up in blankets (if cool) and/or snuggle into cushions whilst lying down. Or be seated, standing, moving or in stillness. Eyes may be open or closed. Nic always encourages listening to your own body.

Sessions start again after the festive break on Monday 9th January at 10am.

If you're interested in joining then please email Nicola at nicola.pearson@cnelm.ac.uk
Home Cooking & Nutrients

This article looks at the best ways to cook at home in order to retain nutrients in the foods most effectively, depending on cooking methods and foods being prepared. It argues for better information to the public about the correct method of preparing certain foods as well as considering phytochemicals and bioavailability of some foods.
Pack Leader Parasite

This fascinating recent research suggests that the presence of a specific parasite known as Toxoplasma gondii may give wolves the ability to be pack leaders.

This parasite has been demonstrated to make animals bolder and more likely to rise to the top of their group, as well as sometimes leaving their home pack and thriving elsewhere. The occurrence of this parasite is telling, and further research is being prepared to see if this is mirrored across other pack-driven species.

The Key to Eternal Youth?

This article looks at how scientists are using a technique in mice known as parabiosis – a form of blood transfusion – to try to 'turn back the clock', restoring and repairing the body from natural degradation. This has significant potential in the fight against degenerative disorders such as dementia.
The Microbiome Podcast

In this episode of the CNM Specialist Podcast, Debbie Cotton – an Australian-trained naturopath and the Head of Clinical Education for Invivo Healthcare – talks with Naturopath and Nutritionist Bobby Qureshi about the key microbiomes of the body; what they do for our health and how they can be implicated in various diseases. This is a great introductory chat into the roles that multiple microbiomes play in our health and wellness.

A recent study links ultra-processed food consumption to premature, preventable death. Researchers looked at national food consumption in Brazil from 2017 to 2018 and found that Brazilians were getting between 13-21% of their total energy intake from ultra-processed foods. They then looked at the 541,160 people between the ages of 30 and 69 that died in 2019 and found that consuming ultra-processed foods was responsible for 10.5% of all premature deaths in this age demographic. They also noted that ultra-processed food intake was responsible for 21.8% of all preventable deaths from non-communicable diseases.

Tomatoes & Gut Microbiome:

A recent study suggests that tomatoes may improve the gut microbiome profile and diversity in piglets. After 14 days eating a freeze-dried tomato powder, researchers detected a shift in the ratio of potentially pathogenic bacteria toward beneficial bacteria, as well as a greater bacterial diversity.

Protein & Calorie Intake:

Researchers investigating the link between protein consumption and caloric intake found a link between lower protein consumption and higher caloric intake from fats and carbohydrates. They found that those who consumed lower amounts of protein in their first meal of the day had higher calorie intake from fat, carbohydrates, sugars, and alcohol in later meals. They also noted that those who consumed less protein in their first meal consumed more highly-processed foods throughout the rest of the day.
Mulligatawny Soup

A hearty, warming soup to keep the UK cold out.

Serves 4
Ingredients:

3 tbsp olive oil
1 large red onion, peeled and finely chopped
2 celery sticks, finely chopped
1 large carrot, peeled and finely chopped
Salt and black pepper
1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated
3 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped
2 tsp basmati rice
2 tsp coriander seeds
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp black peppercorns
½ tsp turmeric
1 green chilli, finely chopped
200g tinned chopped tomatoes (half a can)
750ml beef stock
1 small cinnamon stick
400ml tin coconut milk
Juice of 2 limes
250g beef fillet, cut into fine slivers
200g flat rice noodles
1 large handful coriander leaves, roughly chopped, to serve

Directions:
Heat a large, deep casserole and, when hot, add the oil and turn down to a medium flame. Add the onion, celery and carrot, season generously, then sweat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. Add the ginger and garlic, and cook, stirring, until soft – about five minutes.
Meanwhile, heat a small dry frying pan, gently toast the rice and the coriander, fennel and cumin spice seeds for two to three minutes, until fragrant, then take off the heat. Once cool, mix with the peppercorns and grind to a fine powder (use a spice grinder or pestle and mortar). Stir into the onions et al, add the turmeric and chilli, and cook for a few minutes. Add the tomatoes, stock and cinnamon, and leave to simmer for 20 minutes, so the flavours develop.
Tip in the coconut milk, bring up to heat, then squeeze in the lime juice and season the soup to taste.
When you’re ready to eat, cook the noodles according to the packet instructions, drain and transfer to soup bowls. Top with the strips of raw beef and pour on the hot soup. Scatter over the fresh coriander and get slurping.

Facebook Reviews

To support presence on social media we would appreciate a brief review on our Facebook page.

Your review should only take a few minutes of your time and and can help some prospective students understand your experience as a student. Reviews from recent and upcoming graduates of the degree programmes and clinical programmes would be welcome.

We would like to gather your feedback for CPD events at CNELM. There are several upcoming events to be held at CNELM and it would be great to gather your thoughts on these events, as well as internal events such as Lab days and other events run by CNELM staff.

Could anyone who has attended these events please email me their brief thoughts on them to coriander@cnelm.co.uk.
