The Gut-Eye Axis

This fascinating review paper explains the possible mechanism behind the gut-eye axis – it seems that our love for the multiple microbiome axes continues!

The article looks at the evidence we have so far on how the gut microbiome may impact eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, choroidal neovascularization, and uveitis.
WaterBear Streaming Service

Launched in 2020, WaterBear is a completely free streaming-for-impact platform. Its video content and interactive hub allow people to stream short films and documentaries about nature, climate change and various sociopolitical issues, making it a little easier to consider our impact and take action. You can download the app for Apple here and from Google Play here
Microbiome Milestones

This article details 20 "microbiome milestones" we have reached in the development and progression of our understanding of the human microbiome. It looks at the effects that agriculture, urbanisation and globalism have had on the human microbiome and how the microbiota might be involved in the future of healthcare.

IBD & Mental Health:

Research suggests the mechanism via which IBD impacts on mental health is by disrupting the gut-brain axis. The new study found that inflammation in the gut may close a key gateway in this communication system that controls the exchange of signals between the blood and cerebrospinal fluid, and that this closure of the gateway disrupted memory and caused anxiety.

Cognitive Decline & Diet:

A new study suggests that a Western diet may contribute to the development of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative issues. the researchers found that mice eating the Western diet showed signs of behavioural changes and changes in gene expression and signalling in line with those typical of people with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Microbiome & Sleep Apnoea:

Recent research suggests a link between hypertension, gut bacteria, and sleep apnoea. The study found that intermittent hypoxia experienced during the night disturbs the microbiome. This bacterial disturbance increased gut membrane permeability, enabling toxins into the bloodstream. This may trigger inflammation, which increases the risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular problems.
Creamy Cauliflower Chilli Soup

A lovely, warming, robust soup to blow away the remains of Winter!

Ingredients (serves 4):
1 tbsp coconut oil
1 onion, finely chopped
1 red chilli, diced and seeds removed
3 cloves garlic, roughly chopped
½ tsp ground turmeric
1 large head of cauliflower, cut into florets
400ml can coconut milk
600ml vegetable stock
2 tsp tamari
Ground black pepper
Handful of chopped coriander leaves

Directions:

Heat the oil in a large pan over a medium heat and sauté the onions, garlic, chillies and turmeric for 5 minutes. Add the cauliflower florets and stir to coat in the oil. Pour in the coconut milk, stock and tamari. Bring to the boil then lower the heat and simmer gently for 15 minutes until the cauliflower is soft.

Blend the soup in a blender or use a hand-held stick blender until smooth and creamy. Divide soup into bowls and sprinkle with chopped coriander leaves to serve.

Facebook Reviews

To support presence on social media we would appreciate a brief review on our Facebook page.

Your review should only take a few minutes of your time and and can help some prospective students understand your experience as a student. Reviews from recent and upcoming graduates of the degree programmes and clinical programmes would be welcome.

We would like to gather your feedback for CPD events at CNELM. There are several upcoming events to be held at CNELM and it would be great to gather your thoughts on these events, as well as internal events such as Lab days and other events run by CNELM staff.

Could anyone who has attended these events please email me their brief thoughts on them to coriander@cnelm.co.uk.

The Optimum Health Clinic Nutrition Support Administrator Role:

The Optimum Health Clinic (OHC) is an award winning integrative medicine clinic (CAM Magazine “Outstanding Practice Award”) with a specialism in fatigue-related chronic illness. OHC was set up in 2004 by Alex Howard (author of Decode Your Fatigue and WHY ME? My Journey from ME to Health and Happiness) following his own recovery from ME/CFS, and the team have continued to specialise in working with the fatigue community ever since then. As a clinic, we have supported over 10,000 clients in 50+ countries, using a multi- disciplinary approach which combines evidence-based Nutritional Therapy and Psychology tools.

With many of the team having had personal experience of ME/CFS, the clinic is also well known for its caring and empathic approach. This role will offer clinical administration support to our superb team of 15 Nutritional Therapists at the clinic. The position is an ideal role for someone in the early stages of their nutrition career, or alternatively it is perfect for someone who is currently undertaking their nutrition studies and looking to gain experience within the nutrition industry.

The Nutrition Support role offers a unique opportunity to work as part of busy and successful nutrition clinic, alongside a team of highly skilled Nutritional Therapy practitioners.

The key duties will include:

  • Creating confidential client case files on the clinic CRM system
  • Co-ordinating the receipt of test results and health-related correspondence for new and existing clients
  • Supporting clients around the execution of bloodwork and functional testing
  • Co-ordinating correspondence with the client’s G.P. or Consultant
  • The preparation of blood test analysis data for our practitioner team
  • The provision of drug/food and drug/supplement contraindication information for our practitioners
  • Providing ongoing administration support for our Nutritional Therapists and acting as a key point of liaison between the team and their nutrition clients.

The candidate requires:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • An honest and strong work ethic, with the ability to work to clinical deadlines
  • Good administration and organisational skills
  • A proactive and problem-solving approach to tasks
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • An empathetic, respectful, inclusive and understanding approach with clients
  • Patience and strong listening skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and good level of I.T. proficiency
  • Access to your own computer, reliable internet access and phone line
  • Existing experience within the nutrition industry or currently training in nutrition

The role is shared with an existing member of the team and full training will be offered.

This remote position will work from home. You will be invited to meet the whole team in person during our quarterly OHC Team Clinic Meetings, held at our headquarters in London.

The hourly rate for this contracting role is £12.50 per hour and the hours are currently c. 26-30 hours per month as an average. This allows for the role to fit neatly around existing study commitments.

There is an opportunity to work additional hours, to provide holiday cover for your team associate, and there is also the expectation that this role could grow and develop with the clinic in the coming months. Therefore, we are seeking some level of flexibility and candidates who have an interest in exploring these possible opportunities.

The deadline for applications is Friday 18th March at 5pm

Please send a covering letter and CV to nutrition@theoptimumhealthclinic.com

Further information about The Optimum Health Clinic can be found at www.theoptimumhealthclinic.com

If you are a student and apply for this Job Opportunity then please make sure the work involved enables you to keep within CNELM Policy and BANT Student Membership requirements.
