2020 SSM Sessions

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself for those new students who may not be familiar with me and my role. As Student Support Manager (SSM), I offer both formal and ad hoc sessions to all students at various points throughout the year.

Formal sessions offer students a formal opportunity to provide feedback on your experience of the course, which is then anonymously analysed and reported back to CNELM in order to enhance services to students.

Aspects of your studies covered in formal sessions include: -
  • Gauging whether you are on track with your study programme
  • If you generally are happy with the level of feedback received for assessments
  • If teaching and administrative staff are accessible and supportive
  • If the learning resources are accessible and suitable to your needs
The focus of the formal sessions is therefore mainly academic.

Ad hoc sessions run monthly throughout the year and provide confidential pastoral support. They serve to offer students additional pastoral support for those of you experiencing extenuating issues which are impacting on your studies in some way - this might be personal/family reasons, health issues, financial worries or anything else which you need emotional support with.

Both formal and ad hoc sessions also cover guidance for students with known or self-suspected Learning Needs or other disabilities.

The next Ad hoc sessions will take place on: -
  • 28th January
Please email me directly at coriander@cnelm.co.uk to book a slot for this.

The first formal sessions available in 2020 for you to let us know about your experience of the course will run from the 3rd-7th February, and you can book a session with me via this linked poll.

A Zoom meeting will be set up for the session, which last for 15-30 minutes. If further time is required then this can be arranged via a separate, ad hoc session.

To book an ad hoc pastoral appointment please email me directly at coriander@cnelm.co.uk and we can agree a time to speak via Zoom.

You are of course always welcome to email me directly with any queries, for example if you need to speak to me on any different date or need pastoral support outside of the ad hoc dates.
Microbiomes & Friendships

This fascinating article looks at how our microbiomes might shape our personal relationships. The researchers involved used a DNA sequencing technique on faecal samples from 48 baboons in two different social groups to identify the microbes found in their guts.

They discovered that an individual’s social group and social network are strong indicators of which microbes will live in that individual’s gut microbiome—even when considering the roles of diet and kin. These baboons live on the same savannah’s where humans first evolved and so may be a good representative of humans.
Empathy in Therapy
This article takes a look at the importance of empathy in clinic and how much it can benefit clients. The review discusses the multi-levelled importance of empathy, from making the right diagnosis to helping put a client at ease and reducing their stress. Dozens of trials suggest that relaxation reduces pain, depression and anxiety, and even lowers the risk of heart disease. Empathy can also activate the brain in such a way that the client makes their own painkilling endorphins.

If anyone has experience of how empathy helped a client of theirs please email me at coriander@cnelm.co.uk
Case Discussions

I would welcome a selection of brief reflections on your studies, student experience, or clinic or coaching clients that you think would be helpful to other students. We would really like to develop this section of the Student Newsletter over the coming year. Please email me at coriander@cnelm.co.uk with your input.

This edition’s case discussion comes from the Natural Medicine Journal and features integrative health expert Russell Jaffe, who discusses addressing men's health issues in clinical practice. Jaffe discusses hormonal balance, prostate health, gastrointestinal health, cardiovascular health, and inflammation.

Read the case discussion here and please do send me your thoughts on this case study for discussion in the next edition at coriander@cnelm.co.uk
Sustainability in our Healthcare System

A good article from the Alliance For Natural Health (ANH) - an internationally active non-governmental organisation promoting natural and sustainable approaches to healthcare worldwide - with regards to sustainability within our healthcare system. It would be interesting to gather thoughts around this and ways in which you feel we can increase sustainability within our healthcare system. Please email me with your thoughts at coriander@cnelm.co.uk

Medicine and Female Bias

This article looks at the medical bias between men and women and is an edited extract from the book Pain and Prejudice by Gabrielle Jackson.

It discusses why male bias in medical trials has led to the misdiagnosis of women’s diseases, some of which still remain a mystery. It would be very interesting to gather thoughts and personal experiences in this area of anyone who is willing to share them. Contributions will of course be made anonymous.

Please email me at coriander@cnelm.co.uk with contributions.
Student Resources

Here is a list of continuing education resources from The Natural Medicine Journal.

The Natural Medicine Journal Podcast Series also expands in 2020 – the Natural Medicine Journal Podcast Series will be available on a broad range of podcast outlets in addition to iTunes, including the top 3—iHeart Radio, Pandora, and Spotify.

Dr Andrea Purcell explains the importance of differentiating between coeliac disease and non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) for appropriate risk stratification and case management.

This film explores the future of wild salmon and the threats that surround it. It explores wild salmon’s slide toward extinction and the threats posed by fish hatcheries and fish farms.

A summary of the highlights of the past decade, by the Alliance For Natural Health (ANH).

EVOO and Dementia

New research into extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) suggest that it might protect against certain forms of dementia. Tauopathy-prone mice who consumed a diet high in extra virgin olive oil had 60% fewer tau deposits than the control rodents and also performed better in standard maze and novel object recognition memory tests. Brain tissue sample analyses showed that the mice who consumed the extra virgin olive oil had better synapse function than the control mice, as well as better neuroplasticity.

Flavonoids and Colorectal Cancer - Mechanism

New research suggests the mechanism via which flavonoids might protect against colorectal cancer. They discovered that a metabolite of flavonoids, 2,4,6-THBA, can slow the rate of cancer cell division as well as supporting the immune system.

Fish Oils, Inflammation

Recent research suggests the mechanism via which fish oils might reduce inflammation. The body makes anti-inflammatory specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) by breaking down essential fatty acids and researchers found that participants who took an enriched fish oil supplement had raised blood levels of SPMs which led to a dose-dependent increase in immune cell attacks against bacteria and a decrease in blood clotting. The results showed a "time and dose-dependent" increase in circulating blood levels of SPMs in response to supplementation.
Beef Noodle Soup

Please email me your favourite recipes to coriander@cnelm.co.uk and how you came to find them!

Ingredients (serves 6):
8 star anise
5g dried liquorice sticks (if you can’t get hold of any, up the star anise to 12)
2 tsp Szechuan peppercorns
½ tsp fennel seeds
50ml sunflower oil
1.2kg beef shin, boned, cut into 5cm chunks and patted dry
6cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and cut into 2mm slices
10 large garlic cloves, peeled and roughly crushed with the flat of a knife
2 red chillies, cut in half lengthways and deseeded
200ml Chinese rice wine
60ml premium dark soy sauce
150ml light soy sauce (again, Kikkoman for preference)
3 tbsp demerara sugar
2.8 litres boiling water
6 spring onions, trimmed and cut in half widthways
250g dry udon noodles

Method:
Put the first four ingredients in muslin and tie into a bundle. In a 30cm-wide and very deep pot for which you have a lid, heat the oil on a high flame. Once it’s very hot, add the beef (take care, because the oil will spit) and saute for about three minutes, stirring frequently, until the meat is browned (depending on the size of your pan, it may be better to do this in two batches). Add the ginger and stir-fry for three minutes, then add the garlic, chilli and muslin bundle, and stir-fry for six minutes more. Don’t worry if things start sticking to the base of the pan, because it will be deglazed later by the liquids.

Add the rice wine, both soy sauces, the sugar and boiling water, and stir to combine. (If your pan struggles to accommodate all that in one go, hold back some of the water and add it later, once some of the liquid in the pan has evaporated.) Bring to a boil, cover, turn the heat to medium and leave to cook for 90 minutes. After this time, add the spring onions, cover and cook for another hour.

When the soup is nearly ready, cook the noodles as per the packet instructions, then divide between six bowls, top with the soup (discard the muslin bundle) and serve.
All times are UK time unless specified.
