Which course did you graduate from at CNELM and when did you graduate?

I graduated in 2014 from the BSc Nutritional Science plus practise diploma.

What did you do before doing this course?

I worked in regulatory affairs, in software consulting, ensuring drugs got to market on time.

What made you decide to embark on this course of study and what attracted you to CNELM?

I had 2 small children and I stopped work as my role was very stressful and I was offered redundancy when the company relocated my department to the USA. I wanted to find a career that offered a better work/ life balance. I also wanted to make a difference in my work. CNELM had a reputation as being the best Nutrition Education provider, I attended lectures on 2 days per week which made my childcare arrangements easier and CNELM was also close to my home.

What was your first role after graduating?

I went to work at Nuffield Health in Farnham as a Nutritional Therapist.

How did you kickstart your practice / career?

I worked part time for Nuffield Health and started to see clients part time in my private practise.

Where has your career taken you so far?

Nuffield Health was a great start to my career, I ran programmes, did talks and corporate work for them. The exposure was brilliant and I got to meet lots of other nutritional therapists.

Do you specialise in a particular area of health?

I specialise in providing nutrition support for my clients with breast cancer, which was the best decision for me. I found that the number of webinars, courses and research that I was receiving on a daily basis was often overwhelming before I specialised. I can now focus my learning and it helped me feel more confident because I know a lot about this one area. I also feel I offer my clients a more comprehensive service.

I have undertaken various specialist training in how to nutritionally support clients with breast cancer, these include: Functional and Integrative approaches to Cancer with Dr Nina Fuller Shavel, Systems approach to Breast Cancer with Dr Nina Fuller Shavel, Penny Brohn centre Bristol Whole Body Approach to Cancer, Health Masters Live Integrative strategies for supporting breast cancer. I am also a member of the British Society for Integrative Oncology and a Medical supporter of the Yes to Life Integrative Cancer Care Charity.
Which part do you think has been the most rewarding or successful?

There is no better feeling than a client telling you that you have helped them to change their lives, that they no longer feel unwell, that their unwanted symptoms are gone or that they have come through a gruelling chemotherapy treatment and yet feel well.

Is there anything you wish you’d known before finishing your studies that you might have prepared for differently?

Knowing how to run a business! I had to learn about marketing, technology, journalism and so much more….it is very time consuming.

What or who has most inspired you in your work?

My clients every time. They are resilient, courageous, strong women who regularly inspire me.

Do you have any tips, hints, things you’d have done differently...?

Specialise, do it sooner rather than later, you can always change your mind, nothing is set in stone.
