Welcome everyone to the May/June edition of The Nutritional Supplement.

The world has changed hugely since I last wrote here and it may already be starting to feel like the new normal for some of you. For others, there are likely still challenges in your day to day lives that were not present before. I have tried not to make this edition all about Covid-19 because, to me anyway, it feels like we might all benefit from some distraction.

Having said that, there are some fantastic articles that are coming out as a direct result of the current situation we find ourselves in and these have been included, along with a resource which might help some of you to relax and cope. As ever, I would welcome your thoughts on any of the material within.

The CNELM Team thank the many students that have acknowledged CNELM's approach and effort in informing and updating students in a professional and timely way regarding COVID-19 with regard to Attendance Blocks, Client Consultations, COVID-19 Position Statement, Exams and other assessments, Boards and Panels, Extensions, Resources and Online Breathing and Relaxation Sessions, and Staff Cover and Who to Contact.

Stay safe and happy reading - Coriander Stone

Transforming Personalised Nutrition

Practice

We are pleased to announce that our Academic Team and Clinical Director Dr. Michelle Barrow's paper on "Transforming Personalised Nutrition Practice" has just been published in Nutrition Reviews. This position paper is the first to define how an evidence based personalised nutrition practice approach might be achieved.

It justifies the need for standardised and validated clinical tools which support pathophysiological reasoning and the use of computational network modelling to enable prediction of the efficacy of interventions in clinical practice.

The paper supports CNELM's Vision and research aims and further helps to position us as leaders in the field of Personalised Nutrition education, research and clinical training. It is one of the outcomes of her DProf research with Middlesex University. Michelle would like to thank her research supervisors, Dr. Celia Bell and Dr. Linda Bell, as well as Dr. James Neil, for their support and guidance in getting this paper to publication. The full paper is accessible from CNELM's Learning Resources page on Moodle, here.

At this time the Nutrition Reviews Journal restrictions means the link to the free access full paper on Moodle is for CNELM staff and student use only. This link must not be shared.  If you wish to share the abstract of this paper please contact Dr. Michelle Barrow for guidance.

Vitamin C for Corona Virus

A new trial is underway to assess the efficacy of high dose vitamin C in the treatment of corona virus (Covid-19). The trial is being conducted at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University in China where it will be administered to participants for seven days. Vitamin C has been shown in research to affect the functions of phagocytes, production of interferon, replication of viruses, and maturation of T-lymphocytes and its levels in white blood cells are tens of times higher than in plasma.

Obesity and Covid-19 Risk

Aseem Malhotra, a well respected cardiologist, speaks to he BBC about why obesity and metabolic syndrome are associated with a 10-fold increase in death from Covid-19.

Natural Therapies for Immunity

This podcast from the Natural Medicine Journal featuring immunologist Heather Zwickey PhD is both an informative and balanced discussion of natural compounds to support the body through disease.

Covid-19 is a new infection in humans. As of this time there is no substantive research evidence to support the use of natural agents in the ‘treatment’ of Coronavirus-Covid 19. There are a number of natural agents, many of which are reported in the public domain that might theoretically be of benefit based on other research studies on the impact of such nutrients on the immune system and for other viral infections.

CNELM considers that diet, hydration, exercise, sleep and relaxation are foundations for health. CNELM does not endorse any specific nutrient, natural agent or product for the prevention and/or management of any health condition.  BANT professional members working as nutritional therapists with clients to address nutritional balance and help support the body towards maintaining health. Nutritional therapists aim to assess the judicious use of nutrients, natural agents and products on an individualised basis. Laboratory assessment may be recommended to justify the use of natural agents to support a personalised nutrition intervention.
Ginger Egg Fried Rice

Please email me your favourite recipes to coriander@cnelm.co.uk and how you came to find them!

The perfect comfort food for when we need a virtual hug!

Ingredients (serves 1):
2 tbsp olive oil
25g piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated
4 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
⅛ tsp aleppo chilli
30g unsalted butter
1 large leek (or 2 smaller ones), trimmed, cut in half lengthways and then into 2cm-thick half-moons (250g net weight)
Salt
250g packet pre-cooked jasmine rice (or leftover cooked rice)
1 spring onion, trimmed and finely sliced
2 tsp soy sauce
1 tsp toasted sesame oil
1 large egg

Method:
Put a tablespoon of oil, the ginger and garlic in a small, nonstick frying pan on a medium-low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-18 minutes, until the mixture is crisp and golden. Stir in the chilli, then transfer the mixture to a plate, spacing it out so it can crisp further.

Meanwhile, put the butter and a teaspoon and half of the oil in a large frying pan on a medium-high heat. Once hot, add the leek and a quarter-teaspoon of salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes, until soft and lightly coloured. Turn the heat to high and add the rice, stirring to break it up and spread it out over the whole cooking surface. Leave to brown in places, stir again, and repeat for four to five minutes, until the rice is heated through and well browned. Stir in the spring onion, soy and sesame oil, and turn off the heat.

Put the remaining teaspoon and the remaining olive oil in a small, nonstick frying pan on a medium-high heat. Once hot, crack in the egg and sprinkle lightly with salt. Top the white of the egg with the ginger mix, sprinkling it evenly all around, and cook for about three minutes, until the white is set and the yolk runny. Transfer the rice to a bowl, top with the egg and serve warm.
All times are UK time unless specified.
