RSM Webinars

The RSM are running an excellent and informative 10-part series on the Health Emergency of Climate Change, which includes episodes on the effects of unclean diet, water on health and that of unborn children. If you cannot join the webinars live, or have missed the first few, you can see all of the catch up’s on YouTube here.
Invivo Mini Webinars

Invivo have introduced a series of Microbiome Shorts: A Mini Webinar Series Exploring The Microbiome, which take place on the last Wednesday of every month up until, and including, November at 12.00-12.30 UK GMT. They will last around 30 minutes, including Q&A.

These webinars will explore the many connections that our microbial residents have with different areas of health and function and will share Invivo’s digestion of the most recent research and their understanding of different topics related to the microbiome, as well as a few clinical considerations.

You only need to register once for the series and then you can join as many of the webinars as you’d like. They will also be recorded and available to watch logged in on our website shortly after each has finished.

You can read more about these webinars here.
Lifestyle Medicine Review

The British Journal of General Practice have written a short review of their interpretation of Lifestyle Medicine which you can read here.

BANT have recently responded, and their comprehensive and fair response to it can be read here. I would like to gather some staff and student thoughts on this - what did you agree or otherwise on in the BJGP article, and would you add anything to the BANT response? Please email me with your thoughts at coriander@cnelm.co.uk
Chemical Farming & Human Health

Zach Bush MD is a physician specialising in internal medicine, endocrinology and hospice care. He is an educator and thought leader on the microbiome as it relates to health, disease, and food systems. He presents here an absolutely fascinating video on the way farming techniques have changed over the past few decades, the politicisation of the food chain and the consequential loss of human health due to the chronic inflammation of disease. This is one of the most concise and well presented videos I have seen on this subject.

Valia Makropoulou

MSc Personalised Nutrition
Valia graduated from the MSc in Personalised Nutrition in 2015 and the NTPD in 2018, having previously worked as an advisor to the Ministry of Finance in her native Greece.

Food Waste for Jets

Researchers in America have discovered a way of turning food waste into paraffin that can be used in jet engines. Previously, biofuels had to come from ‘virgin’ vegetables, grown especially for fuel. This alternative method is able to turn food waste, animal manure and waste water into a competitive, cleaner jet fuel.

Joining this Table Talk Podcast is Derek Vardon, Research Scientist and Project Team Leader at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), to explain this exciting concept.
Junk Food Advertising

The Queen's Speech on the 11th May revealed that the UK Government will commit to restrict junk food adverts pre-9pm watershed and a total ban online. Industry had been lobbying intensely against the proposed measure, so this is welcome news that the Government has held firm.

It would be good to gather your thoughts on this and whether you feel it will be effective, and what more can be done. It would be interesting to hear from students across the world, living in countries that have other policies and what they feel the benefits of these are on children’s and the wider population’s health. Please email me at coriander@cnelm.co.uk with your thoughts.

Diet and Covid Severity:

A new study suggests the role of diet in managing Covid-19. The study looked at 2,884 healthcare professionals working on the front lines of COVID-19 care from six countries and concluded that those eating a plant-based diet were 73% less likely to experience moderate to severe COVID-19, and those following a plant- or fish-based diet were 59% less likely to get seriously ill. The researchers hypothesise that the mechanism is do to with the anti-inflammatory effects of the diets and that nutrient-dense options can help mitigate a number of chronic conditions.

Western-style Diet and Immunity:

Recent research suggests that a Western-style diet may affect the risk of chronic gut infection. Mice in the study which ate a Western-style diet had a rapid decrease in the number of bacteria in their faeces. They were then fed Citrobacter rodentium - which mimics the effects of E. coli - and found that mice that ate a Western-style could not manage to clear the infection as well as mice on a grain-based diet. Mice on the grain-based diet were also completely resistant to reinfection with C. rodentium, whereas those that ate the Western-style diet were prone to repeat, chronic infections with the bacterium.

Vegetables & Cardiovascular Health:

This study suggests that just one cup of nitrate-rich vegetables is associated with improved cardiovascular health. Participants who consumed the most vegetables - equivalent to 2–2.5 cups of leafy vegetables daily - had the greatest fall in blood pressure, associated with a 15% reduction in CVD admissions over the 23 years of follow-up.
Coronation Cauliflower

This recipe comes courtesy of AP Chef and would make a delicious side or light meal for summer.

Ingredients (serves 4):
1 Large Cauliflower
1 tbsp Curry Powder
1 tsp Turmeric
4 tbsp Tahini
1 Garlic Clove (crushed)
1 Lemon (juice)
3 tbsp normal or coconut natural yoghurt
2 tbsp Mango Chutney
4 Spring Onions
25g Fresh Coriander
Toasted Flaked Almonds
Salt and Pepper

Heat oven to 200C and add a large flat baking tray to the oven to heat up. Cut the cauliflower into even sized florets and add to a mixing bowl. Shred the cauliflower leaves, keeping them separate from the cauliflower florets. Wash the leaves and set them aside.

Drizzle the cauliflower florets with olive oil. Add the curry powder, turmeric and salt and pepper. Mix to combine everything. Add the cauliflower florets to the hot baking tray and make sure they are in one even layer. Roast in the oven for 12 minutes until they have charred slightly.

Add the shredded cauliflower leaves to the roasted florets and roast for a further 10 minutes until the leaves have gone slightly crispy. Remove from the oven and leave to cool.

Add tahini, crushed garlic clove, lemon juice, yogurt and mango chutney to a small mixing bowl. Whisk to combine everything.

Finely slice the spring onions. Wash and pick the leaves of the coriander. Finely chop the leaves.

Add the cooled roasted cauliflower to a mixing bowl. Add the dressing, chopped spring onions and coriander. Taste it and season with salt and pepper and sprinkle over the toasted flaked almonds.
