Welcome to this month's issue of The Nutritional Supplement bringing you the latest news from CNELM and our students.  A summary of what's in this issue is below, please click on each link to read the full article.

CNELM Students & Staff Present Research

In the last month, CNELM staff and students have been presenting their latest research to various audiences.  

On 17th June at the University of Westminster's (UWL) Annual Nutrition Forum, recent MSc graduate Deb Archibald presented her research on: "Identifying common functional mechanisms associated with Functional Somatic Syndromes and the potential implications for personalised nutritional interventions: a systematic review of the human literature."  

At the same event, CNELM Principal and Director of Research, James Neil, presented on: "Evidence Based Patho-physiology: the new paradigm for Evidence Based Personalised Nutrition."

The UWL Nutrition Forum is an annual event which has been developed to provide interested parties with direct access to current research in the field of nutrition, food and health.

Meanwhile, on the 18th June at Middlesex University CNELM's Head of Education, Michelle Barrow, presented her Poster as part of her Doctorate research.  Michelle presented her research on a "Survey of nutrition practitioners on tools used to support case history collection, clinical decision making and clinical outcome analysis in obesity management".

Why Weight Practitioner is a 5-day intensive coaching skills course for those who already hold an NLP Practitioner Certificate or ho have completed the Foundation Coaching and Advanced Coaching courses at CNELM (previously called Communication Skills and Therapeutic Coaching).

Focusing on 
the important role the mind plays in contributing to weight issues & energy balance, this short course is an excellent booster to your existing coaching skills, equipping you with even more effective tools and techniques to help your clients achieve their goals.

Attending WW8 should enable you to:
  • Help clients achieve their goals concerning weight and related issues
  • Use a variety of effective processes to encourage clients to become aware of the choices available to them
  • Draw on new, in-depth NLP knowledge, boosting your confidence and your ability to help others
  • Implement new mental technologies to enable rapid and sustainable change for clients in an ethical, ecological and compassionate manner
  • Develop a range of options in how you work with clients, enhancing your current and future practice
  • Reflect on your active and interactive learning experience form the course and how it can be applied in practice
  • Progress to your NLP Master Practitioner
The ‘Why Weight’ programme is recognised as valid Level 7 NLP/Coach training. Students who successfully complete this course can use this ‘training credit’ as a part of the NLP Master Practitioner course run by UKCPD (UK College of Personal Development) in Swindon, Wiltshire, UK.  The 5-day ‘Why Weight’ certification is Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) and will give you a 4 day discount on the full 20 day training programme.

If you have recently returned to study after a break or are new to studying, you may find it useful to attend this introductory workshop organised by Oxford University. The  workshop will explore the full range of basic study skills needed in higher education.

Topics will include:
  • Effective time-and task-management
  • Selective and critical reading skills
  • Effective note-taking
  • Planning and writing an essay
  • Producing and presenting references and a bibliography
The workshop takes place in Oxford on Saturday 19th September 2015, from 10am to 4pm and costs £50.  For further details and to book, please visit the University of Oxford website.
Some of you on the BSc programme will have taken exams lately. In the unlikely event that you may have to re-sit your exam, this is just a reminder of the exam re-sit dates, which are: 28th July and the 9th September. 

If you do need to re-sit an exam, please liaise with Dave Lee, Centre Administrator.

Professional Competencies & Clinic Log

The Clinic Log has recently been updated and is available on Moodle for all those taking the Nutritional Therapy Practice Diploma (NTPD).  It lists all formative and summative assignments which carry a Professional Competency (PC).  

NTPD students are reminded that all assignments which carry a PC must be completed and noted in your Clinic Log as you progress through your academic programme. Completed Clinic Logs are signed off at the end of your programme and you receive a certificate to confirm that you have met the National Occupational Standards for nutritional therapy practice. This certificate is required for your application to register with BANT and the CNHC.

Student Engagement Manager

Tania, the Student Engagement Manager, has been speaking with several students over the past few weeks. This service is a confidential service and provides an opportunity for you to discuss personal challenges that might be impacting on your studies, and to share your student experience in a confidential way.

All students are given an opportunity to speak with Tania twice a year. However, you can also arrange a time to speak with Tania in between these sessions by sending an email to tania@cnelm.co.uk 

Professional Mentor 1-to-1 Sessions

Students are entitled to a single one-to-one session with a Professional Mentor once per year during their study programme at CNELM.  Appointments are now available throughout July & August
 
Maybe you need some inspiration or motivation to maximise your study experience? Perhaps you have a particular academic or learning issue that you would like to talk to someone about? Do you have some ideas about your future career in the nutrition profession that you would like to explore? Or maybe you have already started to work in the field and have future plans for your growing business or career that you wold like to discuss? 
 
For professional mentoring, coaching and guidance through your course CNELM’s professional mentoring service is available to all students. To book your one-one session with Faye Hall during July or August please book via this Doodle calendar.
On Wednesday 2nd September, Genova Diagnostics will be holding an open lab day to which all CNELM students and graduates are welcome.
 
The day will consist of an introduction and overview to some of Genova's most popular test profiles with case study analysis. Tests covered will include the GI Effects Comprehensive, ONE and Adrenal Stress Profile.
 
The event is being held at the BCOM, Lief House, Sumpter Close, Finchley Road, London, NW3 5HR. Price to attend for the day is £25.00

Progesterone and Cardiovascular Protection in Women

This review presents a new hypothesis for cardiovascular protection in women, suggesting that progesterone, as well as oestradiol, is required during the premenopausal years to prevent early heart disease in women.

Oral Magnesium Supplementation for Prevention of Diabetes


Published in April, this double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial evaluated the efficacy of oral magnesium supplementation in people with pre-diabetes and low blood magnesium levels.  Subjects took a Mg supplement equivalent to 382mg once a day, or placebo, for 4 months. Those taking Mg had significantly decreased triglycerides, insulin resistance and improved blood sugar balance compared to placebo.

Research Advocates Nutritional Medicine in Psychiatric Health


With limited benefits from drug therapy in addressing psychiatric health, this paper presents an overview of current evidence for the importance of dietary quality in mental health, and advocates that diet and nutrition should be recognised as critical factors in both physical and mental health.

Peripheral Thyroid Hormone Conversion and Its Impact on TSH and Metabolic Activity


An interesting study looking at the role of deiodinase enzymes in thyroid hormone production and the limitation of current tests for accurately assessing thyroid function. The author summarises his findings: 
"In order to be appropriately and thoroughly evaluated for thyroid dysfunction and obtain optimal treatment, it is important that patients find a thyroidologist who understands the limitations of standard thyroid testing and can clinically evaluate patients by taking an extensive inventory of potential signs and symptoms that may be due to low tissue thyroid levels despite normal standard thyroid tests."

Two quick, easy and refreshing drinks to help keep you hydrated during the summer months:

Raspberry Slush Ingredients
1 generous handful of frozen raspberries
1 large banana, peeled, chopped & frozen
150ml of coconut water


Blitz all ingredients in a blender. 

Gingerade Ingredients
Juice of 1 whole lemon
Pinch of fresh ginger, chopped
Handful of Ice cubes 

Blitz in blender, dispense into glasses and pour over with sparkling mineral water.
