Catherine Broome - In Commemoration
Catherine is very much missed by staff and students. In the words of her colleagues Catherine was experienced as kind, considered, thoughtful, hardworking, graceful and professional. Team members that worked closely with Catherine found her a pleasure to work with.

Students that had benefited from her leadership of the MSc programme and module leadership of Personalised Nutrition Requirements found her an outstanding lecturer, fabulous teacher, passionate, kind, compassionate, reassuring, thoughtful, supportive, helpful, calm, patient, empathetic and encouraged students to question.

Catherine was a lifelong learner and achieved academically gaining a first BSc in Geography with Psychology and an MSc in Environmental Remote Sensing. She changed careers and completed a Masters in Diabetes with Distinction as well as Postgraduate Diploma in Education and a Postgraduate Certificate of Higher Education (teaching) with Distinction.

Catherine enjoyed teaching, educating and practising. She had previously completed a Diploma in Nutritional Therapy. She enjoyed writing public focused articles, giving presentations in schools and designing healthy meals for people with special needs. Catherine when working for Nuffield Health developed and delivered workshops and events. She was a volunteer for the Dale Farm Trust and helped others to learn how to plant and grow organic fruit and vegetables.

In the words of two students Catherine was a great human being and a great advocate for the work at CNELM. One graduate mentioned continuing to refer back to her steer and informative teaching in practice.

We will continue to do our best to do justice to what Catherine put into her work at CNELM.

New Resources & Tools Moodle

CNELM has recently added an 'Assignment Planner' to the Moodle Learning Resources page. This is an extremely useful tool which outlines the different planning and writing stages of an assignment and will also produce a timetable for the different stages when you put the due date into the planner.

We've also added to the Professional Enhancement Moodle page, with a new Food Resource and Food Composition Tools section with some great resources.

The Food Composition Tools include:

  • Food Databanks - A UK dataset that enables you to search for nutrient information on 3,200 of the most commonly eaten foods and recipes in the UK. The nutrient values come from the UK food composition tables (McCance and Widdowson’s The Composition of Foods), a dataset containing the nutrient content of the UK food supply.
  • Food Data Central Database - An open access database created and maintained by the US Dept of Agriculture. The database was developed to be used for the assessment and monitoring of national nutrition in the US and contains extensive food composition data and nutrient information.

There is also a link to the MyNutriWeb website which is an award-winning e-learning and networking hub that provides access to free CPD accredited webinars, roundtable expert panel discussions, a book club, blog and journal clubs to support competence in nutrition. The 1 hour webinars give practical information on supporting clients' diets with topics ranging from "South Asian Diets & Type 2 Diabetes" to "Fussy Eating in Toddlers" and may be of particular interest to those students who are intending to take the PNPD.

The journal club is facilitated by Dr Caroline Childs, Associate Professor in Nutritional Sciences within Medicine at the University of Southampton and with a guest expert  they examine and discuss papers on topics relevant to public health and clinical practice. The journal clubs are available to attend live or you can view the recordings on the NutriWeb website. The journal club is an excellent resource open to students and qualified nutrition professionals, offering the opportunity to listen to experts in the field explain and appraise selected studies.

A link to the My NutriWeb website can be found on the Learning Resources Moodle page:  https://www.cnelm-moodle.com/course/view.php?id=248#section-15, they can also be found as mynutriweb on Instagram.

Online Relaxation Sessions

The CNELM online relaxation sessions continue to run on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 10-10.15am. If anyone would like more information or is interested in joining then they may complete the interest form which can be accessed via the Google Form linked here or email Nicola Pearson at nicola@cnelm.co.uk
Daisy Ilchovska - Lyme in the Limelight

CNELM graduate Daisy Ilchovska has written a book about Lyme disease called Lyme in the Limelight: A new perspective on Lyme Disease - a road map for resilience and recovery and a story of hope.

I found this is a really informative and very readable, fascinating journey through Lyme disease, which is becoming more prevalent across Europe.
Invivo Podcast

If you are short on time, this podcast from Invivo discussing topics such as artificial sweeteners, the gut microbiome and how mindsets can control our metabolism is great for listening to in increments as the time stamps are split by topic.

It explores the many ways in which food and nutrients can influence our moods, with Dr Huberman covering a variety of topics related to the brain-body connection, and discussing and exploring the many available actionable tools.
Supervised Student Training Clinic

The student clinic at CNELM now has an updated form for new clients to get onto the volunteer database. Please share this information with any potential clients who might be interested in participating in the clinic.

Please remember CNELM students cannot themselves participate as a client in the Supervised Student Training Clinic.
ANH Book
The Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) have a new book — RESET EATING, which has recently been released.

They have dedicated pages to the book which you can follow on Facebook here, and Instagram here, where you can engage with comments and questions.

Nutrients & Food Choices:

This very interesting new research has shed new light on what drives people’s basic food preferences and suggests that our choices may be driven and influenced by the specific nutrients in the foods we choose, as animals are able to do.

Fatty Acids & Mortality:

A new study suggests that high intake of fatty acids from nuts and seeds may lower death risk, finding that high plant omega 3 intake was associated with a lower risk for death from all causes. It was also associated with lower mortality risk from cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease.

IBD & Mental Health:

New research suggests the mechanism via which IBD impacts on mental health is by disrupting the gut-brain axis. The new study found that inflammation in the gut may close a key gateway in this communication system that controls the exchange of signals between the blood and cerebrospinal fluid, and that this closure of the gateway disrupted memory and caused anxiety.

Facebook Reviews

To support presence on social media we would appreciate a brief review on our Facebook page.

Your review should only take a few minutes of your time and and can help some prospective students understand your experience as a student. Reviews from recent and upcoming graduates of the degree programmes and clinical programmes would be welcome.

WOMEN WISE SEEKING TWO NUTRITIONAL THERAPISTS:

WomenWise is a start-up developed by two women – one a Nutritional Therapist, one a brand consultant – who want to change the way women navigate through the menopause. Our mission is to help women make informed decisions about how to support their bodies during this time so they can take the menopause in their stride.

At the heart of this process is an analysis of targeted elements of their biochemistry and lifestyle to unearth the individual underlying causes of menopause symptoms. Lower levels of sex hormones will be one factor but there are other factors to take into consideration such as stress resilience, insulin-blood sugar issues and brain chemistry balance.

Women will complete a number of at-home tests (blood, cheek cells, dried urine) plus a detailed questionnaire. All of this information is analysed to provide a clear picture of the underlying causes of each woman’s menopause symptoms and forms the basis of a bespoke protocol to help them get back to feeling like themselves.
