Welcome to this month's issue of The Nutritional Supplement bringing you the latest news from CNELM and our students. A summary of what's in this issue is below, please click on each link to read the full article.

Not too long now until the Festive Season is with us...that will either bring a shudder or a smile to people! Either way, there's no denying that winter is well and truly upon us, with the change of the clocks a few days ago. It's a season where those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere can be affected by SAD and need to watch vitamin D levels closely and continue to spend as much time outside as possible even though little vitamin D is absorbed from sunlight at this time of the year due to the angle of the sun.

This months newsletter has been put together with the help of Elizabeth Willingham, who has joined the editing team as part of her online work experience.

Happy reading!
The next formal SSM (Student Support Manager) meetings will start in November, running from the  25th November – 6th December.

A recent survey was carried out, with the overall aim to evaluate the student experience in relation to the prior Student Engagement service and the impact using it had on their progression and development. The results were overwhelmingly positive, yet some students weren’t aware of the full scope of what the service offered. The role has been revised since I took on the new role of Student Support Manager (SSM) which is now more closely aligned to pastoral support. The Survey Report is now available to you on Moodle.

The SSM role offers the following:-
  • The opportunity to provide feedback on your experience of the course in order to enhance services to students.
  • The opportunity to benefit from pastoral support when experiencing extenuating issues impacting on studies.
  • Guidance for students with known or self-suspected Learning Needs or other disabilities.
  • Referral for a session with CNELM's Coach Mentor if considered appropriate and agreed with the student.
This is what some of the students had to say in the survey about the service:-
  • Being a distance student sometimes makes studying hard and lonely.
  • I really enjoyed talking to the SSM and she made me realise that I am very normal and put me in touch with the right people and I got to do a coaching session as well.
  • The SSM guided me through. I really appreciated this help.
  • It was good to have somewhere to feedback that felt 'safe' i.e where you could remain anonymous.
  • I was able to talk to the SSM about how I was feeling overwhelmed at the time and also about some of the frustrations that I had with the module I was doing at the time.
Based on previous student feedback from the beginning of June we have increased the session times to 20 minutes from 15 minutes. If further support is needed this would be discussed at a session.

In addition to the formal sessions which will run in November-December, it is also possible to arrange an ad hoc session throughout the year whenever necessary for further pastoral support, which can be arranged by emailing coriander@cnelm.co.uk directly. The next ad hoc session day will take place on Tuesday 15th November; please email me directly to arrange a session for this day.
Please see this link for the doodle poll for enrollment in a formal session and I look forward to speaking with you.

Linda Albinsson, an Advanced Learner Entry student to the BSc Hons Nutritional Science programme, discussed in the wake of the new government guidelines the current obesity crisis last month on radio VoiceofIslam.

Below are some key points Linda raised in response to some of the questions that were asked.

How serious an issue is obesity in the UK?
Obesity is a very serious issue in the UK right now and the current figures show that almost two out of three adults are overweight or obese, but even more concerning is that we also see this trend in children. One in three children are reported to be overweight in the UK by the time they leave primary school and research tells us that an overweight child has a considerably higher chance of becoming an obese adult. Despite all the efforts over the last two decades the problem remains.

Do you think operative treatments such as gastric band surgery are useful for those who are obese; and re the results maintainable?

Linda did not think such interventions were a solution to the problem of obesity as they do not address underlying causes.  Obesity is a metabolic problem and if better support was provided much earlier on the need for weight loss surgery may be avoided; obesity is more than a lack of willpower. Linda did not believe results are always maintainable. There are so many different reasons for overeating that can lead to disrupted appetite regulation that eventually leads to metabolic changes. Food and mood are important issues. Providing the person with appropriate tools is important if results are to be maintained.

Are there other methods which can be prescribed by the NHS for obese patients?
NHS methods including support group therapy, coaching and weight loss groups that focus on cooking and health education would be helpful.

Can we as society tackle obesity?
Linda considered that it was essential for society to tackle the obesity problem to enhance quality of life and to ease the burden on the NHS; and that consistent, rapid and drastic measure from all possible angles is needed. Preventive strategies are important. Linda considered that a focus on improving the UK’s food culture to be important to assist people’s choices and options to help bring about change; education is key as is empowering people to make good choices for themselves and for their children.

We would like to invite you all to continue a discussion on this important topic by sending me your comments to one or more of these questions that I can publish with the next newsletter.
Volunteers Required for London Fertility

Show

Foresight are able to offer 3 students an opportunity to volunteer and attend The Fertility Show, London, either on Saturday 5th or Sunday 6th November.

Ideally you could attend for around 4 hours somewhere between 11am until 3pm or 12 to 4pm - to help volunteer on the stand, offer information (remember not advice unless you are eligible to do so) to visitors and cover for lunch breaks etc.

Interest in fertility/women's health/men's health or wanting to work in that field after graduation would be preferred with preference given to final year students.

The benefits of volunteering:

* Meet and work with the Foresight Team
* The opportunity to attend - access a variety of information, talks etc about the fertility field.
* If you want to come earlier in the day/leave later, you can use the time to wander round and/or listen into talks for example.
* A free sample of the female or male multi for yourself/partner/friend.

Unfortunately, the organisers cannot contribute to travel costs, so it's probably going to be most attractive to people who are based in London already.

If anyone is interested, please contact Kelley at:
kelley@foresight-preconception.org.uk for further info. Nearer the event, you'll be given mobile phone numbers etc. to contact on arrival so that someone can meet you with passes. Foresight are happy to talk it over on the phone in advance if you’d like more information.

We would still love more reviews, so could all students kindly take 5 minutes to give us a star rating and some positive comments please? The Facebook page has been promoted quite a lot recently and these reviews also appear on Google, so the positive promotion of CNELM is of benefit to all its stakeholders, including  you, the students. Camexpo Critiques - By You

The CAM EXPO 2016 took place at Olympia, London on the 24th and 25th September. Below are some review of it by CNELM students.

Nicola Denvir postgraduate MSc Personalised Nutrition:
I attended one of the CAM EXPO days. It was good to see the range of products and companies available, and gain contacts.  There was quite a wide range of exhibitors, although the majority were supplement companies. Talking with the company representatives was quite educational.  The list of lectures and taster workshops accessible was extensive and quite overwhelming. I did not participate in any workshop as each taster workshop was £20 and £10 for the business skills workshops so potentially expensive to attend a variety. However, there were a number of keynote lectures which were free, and in retrospect, I think it might have been good spending one day and a half days going around the exhibitor stalls and then the second day listening to all the keynote lectures.

Rose Holmes, undergraduate BSc Nutritional Science:
If you have never attended a CAM EXPO event in London I recommend you seek opportunity to do so. The 2016 exhibition on 24th and 25th September was 2 days full of interesting talks, demonstrations and displays. It is such a fantastic opportunity to learn about new products, trends and initiatives, try for yourself new products and meet up with or reconnect with people in the CAM world.
Of course all the big names usually at these events were there: BANT, CNHC, CThA, CAM magazine, CNM, ION and Balens. And the usual supplement companies: Pukka, Nature’s Plus, A.Vogel, Lamberts, Solgar. In addition, there were many other exhibitors. Let me mention a few of the highlights for me from this year’s exhibition/show:

  • Cytoplan with their range of organic, food-based and highly bio-effective supplements.
  • G & G Vitamin Centre– family business, 50 years in the trade and currently re-branding
  • BioNutri with their new Kefir Compound (with L.bulgaricus, N-acetyl Glucosamine and Glutamine) with samples available
  • RioTrading with their unique and interesting range of products, many from South America
  • Wild Nutrition, Sussex-based….. whose range is expanding, had their new catalogue available
  • Living Nutrition, world’s premier range of kefir fermented wholefood supplements  who have recently redesigned packaging
  • Natren—a new-to-me probiotic product
  • NES Health –who were demonstrating their ground-breaking software that looks at body-field blockages and distortions
  • Terra Nova – who now have the lovely and very experienced Orley Moyal as part of their team to promote their synergistic range of products developed by Stephen Terrass
  • doTERRA—pure aromatherapy oils which can also be taken internally
  • Nouveau Health –with their Toxaprevent products including their latest product Dolovent for dietary management of migraine
  • Elixinol UK Ltd—who were sampling CBD hemp oil
  • BioMedica—Australia’s practitioner only range who had lots of interesting literature and samples of their liposomal products
  • Bestcare—who are re-branding to give their diverse range of products (including Himalayan Crystal Salt, Seagreens, Microrganics Hawaiian Spirulina) more brand continuity
  • Lepicol—who were giving away colourful loo-logo bags and pens to promote their psyllium product
  • SOS Esssentials—with a blood cleansing product based on aromatherapy oils
  • Hifas da Terra—who were sampling yummy chocolate with medicinal mushrooms
  • Alliance for Natural Health—who announced a new practitioner package called Bite the Sun

There were many seminars to attend: Niki Gratrix on the health impact of Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs), Christine Bailey on gut microbiota, Nadia Brydon on Sun Chlorella for detox and digestion, Guy Hudson on Electromagnetics and wellbeing, Gilian Crowther (Cell Symbiosis Therapy Academy)on Mighty mitochondria, Antony Haynes on how to switch on mitochondrial fat burning and Dr Marilyn Glenville (Natural Health Practice)  who gave 2 seminars—one on nutrigenomics and the other on natural alternatives to sugar (the subject of her latest book).
In addition to supplements and foods there were massage and skincare products/services represented.  And I admit to enjoying both a collagen-boosting facial treatment and a much needed massage (after a day of carrying the bags with all the collected literature and sample products).
As usual, I returned home with a bag full of interesting literature and lots of samples.
Always a ‘well-worth-it’ day!

Sian Jefferies

BSc Nutrition Science
Sian graduated in 2011 after completing the nutrition science degree and went on to become a solid staff member of CNELM, covering various job roles throughout the years as well as teaching in various posts.

Read her story here.
Migraines Triggered by Gut Bacteria

New research points to certain gut bacteria linked to triggering migraines in people consuming certain foods. The study found a specific bacteria in the faeces of people who experienced migraines after consuming nitrate-rich foods, which has been shown to break nitrates down more efficiently, causing the swelling associated with migraine pain.
Nitrate-induced headaches appear to be either early onset milder headaches or later onset full-blown migraines, with delayed seeming to occur in people with a family history of migraines and depend on levels of nitrates consumed.
The Guardian also wrote an article on this research which can be found here

Dieting Success Hard-Wired

This new research studied the connections between control and reward systems in the brain and discovered that the ability to self-regulate a healthy body weight may be dependent on individual brain structure. The findings show that dieting success may be easier for some people because they have an pathway connecting these brain systems.

Artificial Sweeteners in Bloodstream

This recent study, which used 22 adults aged 18-45 and 11 children aged 6-12, showed that children who consume artificially sweetened drinks (i.e. diet sodas) absorb double the amount of sweeteners into their bloodstream than adults. We now know that artificial sweeteners exert effects on metabolism, with many questions surrounding their safety. Artificial sweeteners were also found in the breast milk of mothers who consumed products containing them. The study highlighted that absorption varies hugely between people.
Dark afternoons require warm, spicy things! All measurements are approximate - experiment with them depending on your spiciness preference.
