SSM Role & Sessions

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself for those new students who may not be familiar with me and my role. As Student Support Manager (SSM), I offer both formal and ad hoc sessions to all students at various points throughout the year.

Formal bi-annual sessions offer students a formal opportunity to provide feedback on your experience of the course, which is then anonymously analysed and reported back to CNELM in order to enhance services to students.

Aspects of your studies covered in formal sessions include: -

  • Gauging whether you are on track with your study programme
  • If you generally are happy with the level of feedback received for assessments
  • If teaching and administrative staff are accessible and supportive
  • If the learning resources are accessible and suitable to your needs
The focus of the formal sessions is therefore mainly academic.

Ad hoc sessions run monthly throughout the year and provide confidential pastoral support. They serve to offer students additional pastoral support for those of you experiencing extenuating issues which are impacting on your studies in some way - this might be personal/family reasons, health issues, financial worries or anything else which you need emotional support with.

Some comments from students who have used the ad hoc service recently and found it helpful are: -

“I was having some personal issues which were affecting my studies, and the practical suggestions I received helped to reduce my stress levels.”

“I did find it helpful as Coriander gave me various options to consider going forward with the course following life circumstances impacting my studies, and she put me in touch with the right people.”

“I found the service supportive and responsive.”

“I had personal struggles which made my studying experience hard. When speaking with Coriander, she listened to my issues very well, demonstrated understanding, supported me with good advice and even offered her personal experience for dealing with the issues I had. Overall, very positive experience with a SSM who is easy to talk to.”

Both formal and ad hoc sessions also cover guidance for students with known or self-suspected Learning Needs or other disabilities.

Ad hoc sessions will take place on the following dates throughout 2021 and can be arranged by emailing me directly: -
  • 5th October
  • 2nd November
  • 7th December

Formal sessions give you the students an opportunity to feedback on your experience of being a student at CNELM. The formal sessions for 2021 will be confirmed in due course and a Doodle poll will be made available nearer the dates. A Zoom meeting will be set up for the session, which lasts for 15-30 minutes. If further time is required then this can be arranged via a separate, ad hoc session.

Please note the polls will ONLY be for the formal sessions; if you require an ad hoc pastoral appointment with me at another time, please email me directly at coriander@cnelm.co.uk

You are of course always welcome to email me directly with any queries, for example if you need to speak to me on any different date or need pastoral support outside of the ad hoc dates.

If anyone has any further questions regarding the role of these sessions, please do contact me.

Microbiome of Cities

This fascinating article outlines research suggesting that large cities such as London, Tokyo and New York have their own unique microbiome. The article suggests that the microbiome of a city may even be used in forensics to ascertain whether someone has visited a particular city in the past few days and tells us with 90% accuracy where someone is from.
NLP Certificate

The top-up days to the NLP Certificate are taking place on the 22, 24, 26 and 29th November. The top-up days are followed by External Verification on two of the following 3 days: 1, 2, 3 Dec.

Sufficient registrations are needed in order to offer the top-up to Certification from both an experiential and financial perspective. Inevitably there are students that indicated their intention to register and now need to withdraw due to personal reasons.

Several students have expressed interest in gaining the NLP Certification as part of their qualifications gained at CNELM.

Students that have completed the 5-day Coaching in Personalised Nutrition Practice module and the 2 extra coaching days in Skills Development module can apply to take the top-up in preparation for verification days - and this does include students due to take the 2 extra days as part of Skills Development this term.

Fees:
Top-up 4 days: £400 - November
Certification 2 days £350 - December
Total: £750

The fee of £750 can be spread over 3 months in October, November and December.

In fairness to the trainers and students that have confirmed their place we will need to apply a cut-off date of Friday 22nd October and if necessary cancel the top-up course for this year.

We realise time and costs are important considerations. If you are able to participate then please email Emma Stiles emma@cnelm.co.uk.
Biolab Mitochondria Day

I was lucky enough to attend in person the recent Biolab Mitochondria Day conference in London. The conference had originally been scheduled for two years ago, but was not able to take place until now.

There were some fascinating pieces of information that were new to me; for example that melatonin protects the mitochondria but also that the mitochondria produces melatonin. It is thought that many people with mitochondrial-related diseases are "night-owls" for this reason.

Robert Verkerk along with the whole ANH team was also there and you can see his brilliant summary of the day here.

The Sunday Journal from Invivo is always full of interesting and thought-provoking articles, ranging from human health, to ecology, to nature and philosophy. You can see and sign up to the journal here.

Omega 3 and Mortality:

A new study suggests that having higher levels of omega-3 in the blood could predict a lower mortality rate in people over the age of 65 years. The researchers tracked 2,240 participants over 11 years and analysed omega-3 levels in the participants’ blood and found that people with high plasma omega-3 levels who did not smoke had the highest survival estimate compared with people with low omega-3 levels in their blood who did smoke. Participants with high omega-3 levels who did smoke and those with low omega-3 levels who did not smoke were almost identical in terms of survival estimates.

Microbiome & Infection:

A new study suggests that fasting improves the microbiome's capacity to tackle infection and reduces inflammatory responses during intestinal bacterial infection. 40% of fasted mice that were given antibiotics and then fed Salmonella Typhimurium had almost no Salmonella Typhimurium and in the remaining 60% the bacteria had done no damage to the intestinal wall, compared with all of the mice on the fed group. The fasted mice continued to show minimal inflammation or tissue damage even after feeding resumed. The researchers were able to show that these effects were due to the gut bacteria under a fasted state, which were acting to control the bacterial infection. The researchers hypothesise that when nutrients are in short supply during fasting, the gut’s normal commensal bacteria consume what is available, starving Salmonella Typhimurium of the nutrients it needs to expand and cause damage.

Vitamin C - Revisited:

The original data from the 1940's Sorby study researching how much vitamin C is needed for good health has been re-examined, and concluded that 95mg a day is necessary, rather than the original 10mg suggested in the original study to avoid scurvy. Current recommendations vary between 45-95mg per day, but researchers believe that even taking 90 mg doses daily for 6 months is insufficient to reestablish normal wound healing, and that it is still unclear how long vitamin C supplementation is needed for improvement in the majority of people. Optimal levels for heart health have not been established either. Researchers believe that other nutrients such as vitamin D should also be re-assessed using modern techniques, to better determine optimal dosages.
Beef Noodle Soup

A pressure cooker will cut the cooking time dramatically: add the spring onion before you close the lid, then, once the cooker is hissing, steam for 15 minutes. Take off the heat and leave to stand for 30 minutes, until the pressure drops and it’s safe to open. Serves six.

Ingredients (serves 8):
8 star anise
5g dried liquorice sticks (if you can’t get hold of any, up the star anise to 12)
2 tsp Szechuan peppercorns
½ tsp fennel seeds
50ml sunflower oil
1.2kg beef shin, boned, cut into 5cm chunks and patted dry
6cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and cut into 2mm slices
10 large garlic cloves, peeled and roughly crushed with the flat of a knife
2 red chillies, cut in half lengthways and deseeded
200ml Chinese rice wine
60ml premium dark soy sauce
150ml light soy sauce (again, Kikkoman for preference
2.8 litres boiling water/beef stock
6 spring onions, trimmed and cut in half widthways
250g dry udon noodles

Put the first four ingredients in muslin and tie into a bundle.

In a 30cm-wide and very deep pot for which you have a lid, heat the oil on a high flame. Once it’s very hot, add the beef and sauté for about three minutes, stirring frequently, until the meat is browned. Add the ginger and stir-fry for three minutes, then add the garlic, chilli and muslin bundle, and stir-fry for six minutes more. Don’t worry if things start sticking to the base of the pan, because it will be deglazed later by the liquids.

Add the rice wine, both soy sauces and stock/boiling water, and stir to combine. (If your pan struggles to accommodate all that in one go, hold back some of the water and add it later, once some of the liquid in the pan has evaporated.) Bring to a boil, cover, turn the heat to medium and leave to cook for 90 minutes. After this time, add the spring onions, cover and cook for another hour.

When the soup is nearly ready, cook the noodles as per the packet instructions, then divide between six bowls, top with the soup (discard the muslin bundle) and serve.
